iZotope Insight 2 Explained®
-
0:37
Introduction
Adam welcomes you to the course and gives a preview of what he will be covering.
-
2:31
Interface & Layouts
Familiarize yourself with Insight's interface. Explore layouts, global vs meter specific options, and the reset, pause, and continuous calculation buttons.
-
9:49
Loudness & History
Adam introduces Short Term vs Integrated vs Momentary LUFS, and shows how these are recorded visually in "History". He then demonstrates an important nuance about the "target" line color, as well as scales, and recommended LUFS levels.
-
8:09
Levels
Learn about "True Peak", why it's important, when it might be an issue, and of course, how to work around it. Adam also includes a warning about RMS, scales, and finally, a recommended target "peak".
-
13:52
Sound Field
Discover the Polar Sample, Polar Level, and Lissajous sound field meters. Find out what you want them to look like, and why. Adam introduces the concept of "phase", "out of phase", what this looks like in the meters, and why this is important. He finishes by showing this applied to a practical example.
-
5:53
Intelligibility
Adam dives into how to use the new Intelligibility module to evaluate dialogue loudness/intelligibility in a range of listener playback environments. He also explains the concept, demonstrates it in action, and explores the various nuances of gain structure and processing you need to be aware of.
-
10:06
Spectrum
In this video, Adam explores the spectrum analyzer. He first demonstrates the customization options by creating a tonal balance/frequency balance meter. Secondly, "forensic" use case, he uses Spectrum to figure out what was going wrong in a client's piece of audio. The explanation explores a few important principles about frequencies and file types.
-
6:39
Spectrogram
Familiarize yourself with the Spectrogram. The first example shows how this can be used to understand the kick/sub bass relationship, and their respective dynamics. Then, to demonstrate seeing multiple sources at once, Adam shows an example using pink noise, to reference the frequency balance, to see how "flat" your audio sounds. Finally, he shows 2D mode, and how best to use it.
-
1:28
Loudness Overflow Automation
See how to make Insight 2 write in automation, for where Integrated LUFS exceeded target loudness (useful for very long audio files).

Great Video for someone (like me) who knows next to nothing
I am new to music production and even though I only understood maybe 20-25% of what was being demonstrated, it did give me some very useful "insights" (forgive the pun) into how this could benefit my future productions. Overall--excellent! Cheers.

Just What I Was Looking For
I just changed to DaVinci Resolve for video editing and it's work flow is much different than what I was used to. In watching tutorials on DR, I learned about the loudness requirements for YouTube. As I can use all my VSTs in DR, and after using it's loudness metering in Fairlight, It was a no brainer to drop Insight 2 onto the master bus. This tutorial brought me right up to speed, as I had recently updated all my iZotope products. This is much better than the loudness tutorial, which had way too much repetition. Adam seems to have listened to the feedback from that tutorial and made adjustments. I think it should be assumed that anyone requiring this information is going to be pretty intelligent, even if it is dry by nature.

Learned more than I expected
Well… for "casual pros" like me this course was an ear and eye opener. And … a good starting point to dig deeper.
