    Introduction

Adam welcomes you to the course and gives a preview of what he will be covering.

  • image description 2:31

    Interface & Layouts

Familiarize yourself with Insight's interface. Explore layouts, global vs meter specific options, and the reset, pause, and continuous calculation buttons.

  • image description 9:49

    Loudness & History

Adam introduces Short Term vs Integrated vs Momentary LUFS, and shows how these are recorded visually in "History". He then demonstrates an important nuance about the "target" line color, as well as scales, and recommended LUFS levels.

  • image description 8:09

    Levels

Learn about "True Peak", why it's important, when it might be an issue, and of course, how to work around it. Adam also includes a warning about RMS, scales, and finally, a recommended target "peak".

  • image description 13:52

    Sound Field

Discover the Polar Sample, Polar Level, and Lissajous sound field meters. Find out what you want them to look like, and why. Adam introduces the concept of "phase", "out of phase", what this looks like in the meters, and why this is important. He finishes by showing this applied to a practical example.

  • image description 5:53

    Intelligibility

Adam dives into how to use the new Intelligibility module to evaluate dialogue loudness/intelligibility in a range of listener playback environments. He also explains the concept, demonstrates it in action, and explores the various nuances of gain structure and processing you need to be aware of.

  • image description 10:06

    Spectrum

In this video, Adam explores the spectrum analyzer. He first demonstrates the customization options by creating a tonal balance/frequency balance meter. Secondly, "forensic" use case, he uses Spectrum to figure out what was going wrong in a client's piece of audio. The explanation explores a few important principles about frequencies and file types.

  • image description 6:39

    Spectrogram

Familiarize yourself with the Spectrogram. The first example shows how this can be used to understand the kick/sub bass relationship, and their respective dynamics. Then, to demonstrate seeing multiple sources at once, Adam shows an example using pink noise, to reference the frequency balance, to see how "flat" your audio sounds. Finally, he shows 2D mode, and how best to use it.

  • image description 1:28

    Loudness Overflow Automation

See how to make Insight 2 write in automation, for where Integrated LUFS exceeded target loudness (useful for very long audio files).

Product Overview

Adam Pollard delivers an in-depth video tutorial series covering everything you need to know about Insight 2 from iZotope and how to use it constructively! Learn how “seeing is believing” when it comes to all things audio in your productions.

Adam begins by welcoming you and then jumps right in covering Insight 2’s interface, its layout, the differences between Global and Meter specific options, as well as the Reset, Pause, and Continuous Calculation buttons.

Next you’ll explore Short Term vs Integrated vs Momentary LUFS, and how these are recorded visually in the ‘History’ section of Insight 2. You’ll also learn an important nuance about the “Target” line color, as well as scales, and recommended LUFS levels.

Moving along, Adam goes deeper and covers topics such as “True Peak”, RMS, Scales, and a good recommended target “peak” for your signals. Sound Field, the new Intelligibility Module, Spectrum Analyzer, Spectrogram, and Loudness Overflow Automation are then all revealed and explained so you have full visual command over what’s going on in your sessions, and make the correct decisions regarding your levels and mixes.

See the individual tutorial descriptions for more info. If you’re new to iZotope’s Insight 2, or just want to know more about it, pull up a chair and watch “iZotope Insight 2 Explained®” today.

Great Video for someone (like me) who knows next to nothing

I am new to music production and even though I only understood maybe 20-25% of what was being demonstrated, it did give me some very useful "insights" (forgive the pun) into how this could benefit my future productions. Overall--excellent! Cheers.

Just What I Was Looking For

I just changed to DaVinci Resolve for video editing and it's work flow is much different than what I was used to. In watching tutorials on DR, I learned about the loudness requirements for YouTube. As I can use all my VSTs in DR, and after using it's loudness metering in Fairlight, It was a no brainer to drop Insight 2 onto the master bus. This tutorial brought me right up to speed, as I had recently updated all my iZotope products. This is much better than the loudness tutorial, which had way too much repetition. Adam seems to have listened to the feedback from that tutorial and made adjustments. I think it should be assumed that anyone requiring this information is going to be pretty intelligent, even if it is dry by nature.

Once again!

Nice. Thanks for sharing this information. I agree it would have been nice to see what approach you would have used to correct the overages in the automation video, but you can't give it all away in one video lol. Maybe in the mastering video. Much love

Informative but not practical enough

He obviously knows his stuff but I would like to have seen him use this tool in common musical situations. Using it in different genres of music and then making corrections or modifications as a result.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I started producing music just over 5 years ago, right about when Skrillex's Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP dropped.

2. What training have you had?

I'm fully self-taught, and haven't had any formal training. I use online resources and learn a lot by talking to other producers about how they do things too.

3. When did you get into recording?

(same answer as number 1)

4. People you have worked with/for?

DJTechTools, iZotope, Output, CAPSUN Pro Audio, Loopmasters, Plugin Boutique, Industrial Strength, 5Pin Media

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I've had a lot of experience in the EDM space, from producing tracks and sample packs that have charted on sites like Beatport, through to DJing internationally and running a record label. And on the training side I've produced thousands of tutorials, and also tutor people one to one.
