  • image description 2:54

    What is Reason?

A Brief Overview - Now explore what exactly Reason is, and take a brief look at its main user interface elements as well as how to navigate the main views using keyboard shortcuts.

  • image description 6:24

    Creating Instruments & Browsing Patches

In this video, you'll learn the various ways to create instruments in the Rack and Track List, and how to load Presets. You'll also learn about browser focus and how to quickly switch between devices when loading sounds, and understand the relationship between the different Tracks and Devices in Reason.

  • image description 7:33

    Working with Automation

Now that you've looked at editing Clips and Notes, it's time to look at Automation; one of the most innovate and easy to use aspects of Reason. In this video you'll learn how Automation can be handled exactly like a MIDI Clip, and how this can be used to creative effect.

  • image description 4:59

  • image description 6:25

    ReGroove

Sticking with the theme of MIDI processing, let's look at the ReGroove Mixer and how it can be used to apply non-destructive shuffle and delay to your MIDI clips, as well as extract your own personal groove and playing style into a groove preset that can be applied to any number of channels.

  • image description 5:47

    Blocks

Blocks offer a fast, streamlined way of arranging your songs. In this video you'll learn how to create, arrange and convert Blocks. You'll also look at mixing and matching Blocks data with sequencer data, to create variations on the fly.

Probably the best introduction to Reason out there!

I've seen other paid series from Ask Video, ProducerTech etc, but none of them is so "to the point" and immediately applicable as this series. I keep referring back to sections of the series when I use Reason, so I use it as a reference guide, having downloaded it for offline use makes it even more useful. There's so much information packed into this series, and the pace is pretty fast, so expect to watch each section more than once! A good candidate for purchasing and downloading for offline use.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I've been working with computers and music from probably around five or six, when my parents first got an Atari with Cubase 2.0! Been hooked ever since.

2. What training have you had?

Mostly it comes from my parents. They're both songwriters and producers, so I grew up watching them and learning in their studio. More recently, just self-taught really.

3. When did you get into recording?

I guess I first started taking it seriously when I was around 15 or 16, which is when it became a bit more feasible to actually record at home and go beyond GM. That's when I started picking up other instruments aside from keyboard, guitar, bass, drums.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've just started working with the guys over at Red Bull Media House and am on my second album with them now! Some of my sound design work has found its way to the studios over at the likes of Blizzard, and I've done a great deal of custom composition and production music for library music companies both here in the UK and in the Unites States.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I just love helping people out I guess! Through my personal music projects I've connected with thousands of fans from across the world, and most of them are aspiring producers and musicians themselves. So it's nice to be part of a wider community of creative people and help them along the way, as others helped me.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Newcomers to Reason, watch this! I find this to be a perfect example of how to give an overview of a program to newcomers (or people returning to the Reason fold like me!). The first time starting Reason 10 after having last used it at version 5 (!), all the big changes were kinda overwhelming. This tutorial series got me up to speed really quickly. Subjects are being brought clear, concise, never too long, never too short. The narration is clear and relaxed. This is the full five stars for me.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Very thorough... This is a tutorial by a guy who obviously knows his stuff. I remember using Reason way back in version 2, and have dabbled on and off since then. However, I have never been able to fully come to grips with it and often found the sequencer clunky. That said, it has always been really fun to play with for sound design. After watching this tutorial I think I might be ready to give it another shot.

As I said in my title, this tutorial is very thorough despite being an introduction to Reason. A lot of introductory tutorials cover their subjects in a very surface level manner, but not here. Hell, I even learned some general stuff about mixing along the way. Awesome, awesome stuff.
