Initial Mix Balance with Mix Assistant

In this video, we use Relay plug-ins on every track alongside the Visual Mixer to utilize the new Mix Assistant feature to set a good balance focused around the vocal. We also investigate panning in the Visual Mixer to set our left/right balance as well.

  • image description 5:54

Tweaking Mix Balance Using the Visual Mixer

See how you can use the Visual Mixer to tweak the balance created by the Mix Assistant. We discuss altering volume, pan and stereo width settings of individual sounds and also using Snapshots to audition different mix settings.

  • image description 9:33

    Basic Gating with Neutron 3

In this video, we use Neutron 3's amazing Gate Module to clean up the kick, reduce the sustain of the snare body and try out tightening up the drum loop.

  • image description 13:11

Subtractive EQ with Neutron 3 Pt. 1

Learn how to use Neutron 3's Equalizer plug-in to help bring into focus the frequencies of our Kick and Snare sounds. We also offer an explanation of the importance of subtractive EQ.

  • image description 13:31

Subtractive EQ with Neutron 3 Pt. 2

Continuing on, explore Neutron 3's Equalizer to remove unwanted frequencies and enhance the separation of the sounds in the mix.

  • image description 7:26

    Basic Compression Pt. 1

In this video, we start off by organizing our sounds into busses and then apply Neutron 3's Compressor to the drums to allow them to sit back in the mix slightly.

  • image description 9:21

    Basic Compression Pt. 2

We continue the process by applying Neutron 3's Compressor to other mix elements, allowing us to stage sounds front to back. This creates a nice 3D space with front back separation enhanced.

  • image description 10:10

    The Sculptor Module

In this video we apply Sculptor to de-harsh our guitars and enhance our bass sound. We outline how you can use this plug-in to make sounds in your mix the "best version of themselves."

  • image description 9:46

    Using the Track Enhance Feature

See how to apply the new Track Enhance Feature to create a custom preset for the lead vocal and vocal harmonies. This allows the vocals to be brought out of the mix. We tweak the preset to sit correctly within the context of our mix.

  • image description 7:55

    The Masking Meter

In this video, discover how to use the Masking Meter feature to add separation to the 2 guitar parts, helping them to individually stand out. We also EQ the harmony vocal against the lead vocal to again enhance the separation between the two sounds.

  • image description 13:28

    Building Channel Strips from Scratch

Explore how to build a custom channel strip for the intro drum loop, including transient shaping to enhance the kick drum. We then go onto introduce sidechained dynamic compression on the bass triggered by the kick of the drum loop to increase clarity and headroom.

  • image description 11:49

    Harmonic Excitation

In this video, we now apply Neutron 3's Exciter Module to tame transients in the mix and also increase thickness and vibrancy.

  • image description 8:13

    Parallel Processing with Neutron 3

Discover how to use Neutron 3 in parallel to create an area of density for the musical parts in the mix which helps bring them out and add to the loudness of the track. This is done using a combination of EQ, Excitation, Compression and Sculptor.

  • image description 12:47

    Basic Master with Neutron 3

In this final video, we use Neutron 3 to create a basic master with some gentle EQ, Sculptor, Saturation and Compression. Finally we use the Limiter feature to gently limit the mix to get a loud version to send out to labels etc.

Excellent. In depth.

Plenty of real world mixing examples to help demonstrate what is for most people a very subtle art. New features explained well, without all the iZotope company hype. Includes some really good workflow strategies that aren't necessarily part of Neutron but work even better with Neutron's in built inter plugin communication. I learned a lot from this course, and will be watching it again.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
