Using Linear Phase EQ for Frequency Re-Balancing

In this first video, we use Linear Phase EQ to roll off the high and low frequencies of the pop track and add in some extra warmth to balance the frequency spectrum.

  • image description 10:00

Advanced EQ Techniques with Linear Phase EQ

Next, we use Logic's Match EQ to apply the frequency curve of a reference track onto our pre-master, and then use Linear Phase EQ to balance the Mid/Side bands of our track, as well as fix problems in the L/R balance.

  • image description 10:36

    Tape & Vintage Eq Saturation

Now we'll cover tape and harmonic saturation using Logic's Vintage EQ options which allows us to add fatness and richness, as well as musically round off harsh transients.

  • image description 7:46

    Phat FX, Overdrive & Distortion

In this video, we now use Logic's Phat FX, Overdrive and Distortion effects alongside some Linear Phase EQ to focus the saturation in certain areas of the frequency spectrum that need to be enhanced.

  • image description 13:32

    Adding Groove & Front/Back Perspective

Larry now uses Logic's amazing Compressor in clean and classic mode, plus musical release times to increase front back perspective and groove.

  • image description 12:06

    Peak Limiting & Density Compression

We'll now experiment with using very fast peak limiting compression and a smoothening density compression setting by tweaking our attack, release, threshold, and ratio parameters for amazing compression results.

  • image description 13:29

    Parallel Compression/Saturation

Larry now shows you how to apply compression in parallel to a loop to make up for deficiencies in the frequency spectrum. We do this by using dense compression combined with EQ and saturation.

  • image description 11:25

    Multiband Compression & Expansion

In this video, Larry demonstrates how to use multiband compression with the Multipressor plug-in, and then expansion using the Expander plug-in. This allows us to really hone in on areas of the frequency spectrum and work on them in different ways.

  • image description 11:12

Imaging with Stereo Spread and Linear Phase

Next, investigate using Stereo Spread, Linear Phase and a combination of Vintage EQ and Linear Phase to hype up the high frequencies of a slightly flat pre-master.

  • image description 7:22

    Limiting with Logic Pro

In this video, we cover how to bring a track up to commercial levels using Logic's Adaptive Limiter.

  • image description 14:27

Mastering the Pop Track "Soulbox - So Good"

Watch Larry master the track from start to finish using EQ, tape saturation, compression, stereo spread and limiting.

  • image description 16:54

Mastering “Get To Know - Sunshine ft Femi Santiago”

Now see and hear Larry apply linear phase EQ, compression (in line and parallel) alongside stereo spread and limiting to bring the track up to the required volume.

  • image description 14:21

Mastering “Stranded on a Planet - When You Think About Me”

Larry now applies the techniques you have learnt throughout the video series to master the country track.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
