    An Introduction to the Series

In this first video, Larry welcomes you and presents the overall vision of this video series.

  • image description 6:11

Using the Groove Track with Sequenced Drums

See how to use Logic's Groove Track to extract the groove of a vintage drum break and apply it to a pattern generated by Logic's sequencer.

  • image description 7:44

Using the Groove Track with Recorded Drums

Continue looking at the Groove Track with recording drums with a MIDI keyboard and then live percussion recorded in the studio.

  • image description 9:28

    Adding Drummer Tracks

Next up, watch how to add a Drummer Track playing an electronic kit and a percussion drummer track adding in some extra parts that we haven't recorded.

  • image description 10:48

    Adding Custom Apple Loops

In this video, explore how to take sounds from a previous project and add them into the current arrangement by adding them to the Apple loops library. These are then key mapped to ensure they transpose to the key of our project.

  • image description 11:02

Creating Chords with Chord Trigger & Transposer

Now it's time to add some chords to the track which we do using a combination of Chord Trigger and Transposer to create a "fool proof" patch for adding a solid harmony to the arrangement.

  • image description 10:25

Adding a MIDI Bassline with Transposer

In this video, discover how to use Logic Pro's Transposer MIDI effect to create a bassline using a jazzy double bass patch. The Transposer ensures our jamming remains within the key of the track.

  • image description 13:46

Adding a Melody with MIDI FX

Next up, see how to use a combination of MIDI FX plug-ins to create a "generative" harp part which allows Logic to take care of the melody generation while we choose parts that work within the track.

  • image description 10:29

Modulating Filter Parameters with the Modulator

Now watch how to add in a Modulator allowing you to modulate the filter section of an Autofilter which we place on the harp sound, which is then tweaked and printed as MIDI.

  • image description 9:41

    Playing in Transposed Melodies

In this video, see how to use the Arpeggiator and Transposer alongside the MIDI keyboard to "hit" notes and always remain in key! This is a very simple way to approach melody creation.

  • image description 5:52

    Drawing in Scale Quantized Melodies

Watch how to use Logic's Piano Roll with scale quantize and the brush tool to draw in melodies without being able to input a wrong note or a note outside the scale. Then see how to draw in a visual representation of the scale you are working within to make drawing melodies even easier.

  • image description 10:48

Creating Harmonic Variation in the Track

Next up, explore how to create a B section for your track with different chords. In order to achieve this, we return to the chords to play in some harmonic variations, and also add a bassline which follows these new chords. Then see how to call upon the Apple loops library to add some extra color to the arrangement.

  • image description 10:12

Creating an Arrangement Using the Arrangement Track

In this video, discover how to "sample" the arrangement of a reference track and add it into Logic's Arrangement track. We use this to populate the track sections with the content we have created. Then see how to use the Arrangement Track to audition different arrangement ideas.

  • image description 10:15

    Adding in Drum Fills

Last up, learn how to use Logic's Drummer Track with no individual kit pieces selected to auto-generate drum fills for us. We use this to create drum fills with different drum sounds including electronic presets. See how!

Product Overview

Logic wiz Larry Holcombe presents detailed Logic Pro video tutorials! Watch and see how come up with new ideas, parts and performances using numerous features and functions in Logic Pro, that all work together in the same key and tempo. No music theory knowledge is required to use these tips, techniques and hacks, and the methods shown result in interesting and creative new parts that you can use for your songs and productions. The Logic project and audio files that are used in the videos are included via the course extras link so you can follow along with your Logic system! These videos are designed for those who already have an understanding of Logic Pro.

Larry welcomes you and presents the overall vision for this video series, and then jumps right in showing you how to extract the groove from a vintage drum break using the Groove Track and apply it to a pattern generated by Logic’s sequencer. Then you'll see how to add sounds from different projects to the Apple loops library and keymap them to ensure they transpose to the key of the new project. Then you'll learn how to add chords to the track using a combination of Chord Trigger and Transposer to create a “fool proof” patch for adding a solid harmony to the arrangement.

The baseline is next, and Larry shows you how to use Logic Pro’s Transposer MIDI effect to create a cool bassline using a jazzy double bass patch, all while ensuring your jamming remains within the key of the track. Moving on, Larry teaches you how to use a combination of MIDI FX plug-ins to create a “generative” harp part which allows Logic to take care of the melody generation, while you choose parts that work within the track.

Throughout the rest of the videos you'll explore and discover tons of ways to automatically generate and spice up your parts and arrangements by using Logic Pro features such as the powerful Modulator, Transposer, Arpeggiator, and Scale Quantize. You'll also see how to create harmonic variations, alternate arrangements, auto-generate drum fills and more.

To see what these comprehensive Logic Pro production video tutorials show you, and how you'll be able to auto-generate interesting and creative rhythms, parts and arrangements quickly and easily, see the individual Logic Pro tutorial descriptions on this page. Very interesting twists and turns. This is one that bears several repetitions and working along with it. Good stuff. Especially the groove option. I didn't really know how to use it. Makes an enormous difference!

Hands down one of the best Logic tutorials. Just so many useful tips (never used the scripting and many of the midi tools taught). Nicely explained too.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
