    Interface & Getting Started

In this first video, we look at the user interface, inputting notes using MIDI and our cursor, and then changing velocity values for individual hits.

  • image description 8:09

    The Panels & Kits

Now we look at the Basic, Control, Effects and Export panels in Captain Beat, as well as explore patterns and how to save them. We then investigate Kits and how we can mix and match patterns and Kits to create interesting and varied grooves.

  • image description 2:30

    Custom Kits & Arranging

In this video, we cover saving custom kits and working with the sections tabs to enable Song Arrangements to cover our arranging needs.

  • image description 8:47

    Making a Beat Pt. 1

We now construct a beat manually by inputting notes, and then make some adjustments to create different alternative sections. We then export the master bounce for each section to outline this workflow.

  • image description 6:04

    Making a Beat Pt. 2

In this final video, we construct a beat using patterns, and then make some adjustments to create different alternative sections made up of different patterns. Finally, we export the stems for each section to outline this alternative workflow.

Not efficient!

This tutorial is too long for several parts and not useful. Make it shorter and clearer instead of playing around uselessly with beats over beats.

Really Gets To It

Thanks for this course! Captain Beat looked promising when I first got it, but watching other videos, including this course, has me see the power of using this plugin. Looks really efficient from a time-saving perspective, yet really clear visually...and got some great tips and ideas just watching the course. So much packed in a very short amount of time. I appreciate that!

Good run through!

Nice explanation of features and functions. It's part of a series of products which are, on the surface, ' A bit gimmicky', but they are really useful if you have writers block, or just want to very quickly develop an idea. I find that it's too easy to get bogged down with editing sounds / patterns and I feel more productve if I just push on with a complete idea and then do fine editing at a later point. The aptain tools and similar products are interesting from this point of view and the video explanation here is great!

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
