    Introduction

In this video Michael explains all of the components that make up the Waves SSL Bundle., taking you through the EQ plug-in, both the E and the G series Channel Strips, and the G Master Buss Compressor. This is an overview that will help you understand what is included in the bundle and give you a solid foundation for the following videos.

  • image description 5:25

    The SSL EQ Plug-In

What are all the functions of this wonderful EQ? Michael not only takes you through each knob and switch, but also explain what their functions are so that you're better equipped to use it in your mixes.

  • image description 14:14

    The SSL E & G Channel Strips

The first channel strip was the E channel strip, and about three years into the launch of the bundle the G Channel strip was added as an extra plug-in. There are some parts of the channel strips that are the same, however the consoles were different, so Michael explains what those differences are, and how best to use each plug-in to get the most out of your sound.

  • image description 3:05

The SSL G Master Buss Compressor

This plug-in emulates the master buss from the original 4000 series SSL Console which has a legendary sound. However, as this is a plug-in, and is not hard-wired and routed to a console, you get the benefit of using this amazing plug-in multiple times in a session. How best to use it? Michael shows you how.

  • image description 14:09

    SSL Session Workflow Pt. 1

In this 2 part video, Michael goes through using all the four plug-ins in a recording session for a song. He shows what instruments and tracks they're used on, explains why he chose the specific plug-ins, and how they benefit the tracks in question. Although the viewer may have different opinions on the sound and how to best use these plug-ins, this video will still be very beneficial and leave you much better equipped to go into the studio knowing what this bundle is capable of.

If you’ve never seen or used a compressor, this “tutorial” might be for you. The presenter is actually pretty good and enjoyable to listen to, however this can really only be useful for the very inexperienced beginners who have never seen or operated a compressor or eq, it really doesn’t go much beyond that. Also some of the info is plain incorrect like for example how the analog buttons work, they don’t switch all the analog modeled linearities on/off but they really work different in different plugins. In the waves api bundle for example they’re doing exactly that, switching the saturation and noise and added harmonics off, however in the SSL bundle that’s being demoed here it’s quite different, here the analog button just toggles the noise/hiss, even with analog off the plugin still adds the harmonics/overtones/saturation (I don’t know if it’s a bug/mistake in the coding that it’s different between the api and waves plugs, but that’s what it is), so the info that does how beyond the basic explanation of eq and compression is actually incorrect. So while this tutorial is well produced and the presenter is very charismatic, it can only be seen as the most basic beginners guide to eqing.

Response from Customer Service:

Thank you for your review. All of our Explained® series are designed for the beginner to get up to speed on the chosen topic. This was a tutorial of fundamentals for the Waves SSL Bundle from the inception.
Regarding the misinformation you cited, the author works for Waves and as far as Waves are concerned, in the SSL with that analog on off button, they have always maintained that the Analog on off button turns the analog emulation on and off, and that includes saturation etc.
He will look into this for you and if something has changed since the tutorial was shot, I will update this reply for you.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I was classically trained in piano and voice from the age of 5. Trained through the Royal Academy of Music in London, then fell in love with electronic music when i was 16 buying my first synth, the infamous Korg Poly 800!

2. What training have you had?

Sounds corny but it really was the school of hard knocks. I knocked on studio doors until one let me in, and worked for free for the first year. When I said I was going to have to leave due to having no money left, they gave me a salary of $14,000 a year, but it was an IN and I took it. I spent all free hours, watching, listening, and learning anything I could. When the studio wasn't booked I was in there. The in house engineer used to give me copies of multi tracks that I could remix and mess with. So I learnt by making mistakes, and being around mentors, all be they involuntary ones. As far as Avid Pro Tools and Waves plugins are concerned. I spent 5 years as north america product specialist for Waves, basically being the go to guy for high end studios, engineers and artists, and then moved to Avid to be part of the pro audio team for North America. So I have an immense amount of experience with both those lines.

3. When did you get into recording?

I was 17. Hassled studios until one of them finally got so fed up with me that they said yes come in and shut up, which is exactly what I did……….for a few weeks. Then I started with the questions but they were stuck with me.

4. People you have worked with/for?

Acoustic sessions with everyone from Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, to Shakira. I had 2 number one singles with a band that we launched in Australia, a duo named Shakaya. I've been the go to person for every studio from OceanWay in Nashville to Setai Recording and Hit Factory in Miami. I was national production director for a national radio station network in Australia, overseeing producers in 40 odd radio stations. I worked with Icehouse WAY back when in the early 90s. I spent a year working with Scott Stapp from Creed working on his new album. I spent a lot of time in Jamaica for a couple of years too. Some great artists over there.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I LOVE helping, and I love demoing. When I've been asked how to do something, I come up with analogies that I can't even think of coming up with in my own time. Annoys the heck out of me to be honest. I get a real thrill when a studio or an artist rings me and are desperate, and I manage to help them through it. Sometimes its as simple as a 5 second answer, Sometimes I'm helping them come up with ways to mould the sound that becomes the album on the radio around the world. All up its rather fun.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Great turorial! Nice work I loved the tips and tricks and the creative workflow in this well-delivered and easy to watch tutorial. It might have been worth mentioning that the G and E channel strips also differ slightly in the sidechain EQ options (according to the manual). The G only allows the filters to be in the dynamics side chain but not the EQ. Vice versa for the E channel.
