If you ever wished you could record in world famous Abbey Road Studios in London, studio expert Todd Tatnall takes you there virtually, in his latest series, “Waves Abbey Road Collection Explained”! Todd goes through each plug-in in the collection, meticulously modeled from Abbey Road’s own famous hardware and shows you how to use it and get that classic sound.

Todd begins by giving you an overview of all the “virtual gear” in the Abbey Road collection. After showing you how to install and register your Waves bundle, he starts with the EMI TG12345 Channel Strip. Next, he moves to the J37 Tape plug-in, which faithfully emulates Tape Saturation, Wow & Flutter, and Delay.

Moving on, Todd now reveals the amazing console plug-ins, the REDD 17 and RED 37-51! From there, he explores REEL ADT and Reel ADT2V, where he shows you how to use Waves’ Automatic Double Tracking Plug-In. Next up, the RS56 Passive EQ with its “Curvebender” mode, and the King’s Microphones, an emulation of the British Royalty’s own mics.

Todd ends the series with a look at the WaveSystem Toolbar, a constant in every Waves plug-in. Whether you’re a longtime user, or looking to add a unique and powerful collection of plug-ins to your studio, watch “Waves Abbey Road Collection Explained” today and get that classic sound!

Useful Tutorial

A useful review for the Abbey Road Collection. It is clearly explained and well narrated. However, it would be nice to have had some additional audio samples, other than a single mediocre heavy metal number.

ABBEY ROAD COLLECTION

My only complaint is: When comparing the "Bypass" mode back to the "Processed" mode was way too quick...I would like to hear the change come about on basically the same audio passage ..engaging and disengaging too quickly was not enough time for my ear to adjust to the subtleties you were trying to point out.

REDD 17/REDD 37-51

I have only this plugin and also the AB Reverb plugin of the Abbey Road Collection - so I haven't had a need to cover the rest just yet. In regards to the REDD Series the layout explanation about the features of the plugin was extremely helpful and I would add - "is a major time saver as well". Would have like to have seen more audio examples of the plugin(s) in use though - other than that it was very informative.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

When I was really young, maybe 3 or 4 years old. That's when I got my first (toy) drum set and played it all the time. I was studying viola at 7, piano at 8, and drums at 10.

2. What training have you had?

In college, I received a Bachelor of Music in theory/composition from SIUE, and a Bachelor of Science in recording production and technology from MTSU. Working in big studios in Chicago after college, I learned as much if not more working as an assistant/2nd engineer, often repairing/troubleshooting problems on the fly. It better equipped me to work independently AND with others.

3. When did you get into recording?

In high school. My punk band saved all our pennies to record at an 8-track studio for $10 per hour. I was fascinated by the power of multitracking, overdubbing, mixing, etc.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've worked with commercial music producers and talent for TV and radio commercials, many of which were national/international brands. I also worked with bands and artists in the studio, including the Frogs, Kelley Deal, James Iha, Sebastian Bach, any many others. As a tech support engineer, I've helped thousands of customers. I worked directly with several high profile customers, including John Fogerty, Bruce Swedien, Oscar Petersen, John Tesh, Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish), Greg Lisher (Camper Van Beethoven), Chris Vrenna, and engineers for Paul Simon, Wilco, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and ICP to name a few.

Why are you so good at training people?

When I was providing technical support, my approach was not only to solve the problem, but to also listen carefully to the end-user's needs AND explain what the cause and solution of any problem was. Putting technical jargon into more relate-able terms helps. I'm also an adjunct professor at a local university, and apply the same ideology when teaching. Whether you're working with a customer or student, you have to put yourself in their shoes.
