Final Tweaks, Quick Mastering & Playthrough

In this final video, Paul teaches you how to route the snare drum to its own channel and use reverb as a special effect in between transitions, as well as how to do some super quick mastering, and then wraps it up with a playthrough of the finished song, ready for vocals.

Product Overview

Super producer Paul Ortiz pulls back the curtain on the style of Post Malone in this in-depth U Produce™ series! See how to make an authentic track in the style of Post Malone step by step from scratch. Shot in Reason 10, the ideas and techniques will work with any DAW, and the Reason 10 session is also included!

Paul starts off by welcoming you and talks about what you’ll learn in the series. He then jumps right in, creating the iconic Post Malone chord and drone bass sounds.

Next, Paul shows you how to design some cool mellow melody sounds and parts using Reason 10’s Grain synth, followed by a tutorial on layering snare sounds to create that classic Hip Hop / Trap snare sound.

Kick, Hats and Sub Bass design are next, and Paul uses Reason 10’s new Europa synth, taking advantage of its unique waveshaping and modulation envelopes to create custom boom patches.

Next, taking inspiration from the song "Rockstar”, Paul shows you how to design a simple, quirky synth patch to create a counter melody for the chorus section.

Paul then goes deeper and starts developing the arrangement and transitions, shows how to do some interesting Sidechaining techniques, add dynamic vocal sound effects, and then ends with a video on final tweaks, quick mastering and a play through of the finished track.

The best advanced tutorial on how to produce in Reason

First compliments for the teaching technique: awesome, not a second wasted. This is a tutorial about how to do tutorials for all other instructors. Workflow: I learnt so many tips from the tutorial, you have to pay attention since he continuously uses shortcuts and takes advantages of a lot of features of the sequencer to speed up work.. Producing: this is not a basic tutorial and you are suposed to know how the rack, sequencer and each device work. He does not walk you through the devices, but for example shows you how to use Europa to get a certain bass sound he has in his head and describes as "dark but warm". This is most useful. Add that he creates the whole of it from scratch, using only stock devices and samples; no mojo-compressors / magic-eq required, he just shows what one can achieve by merit of his own skills.

Best "First Song with Reason"

Great course, and a fun song to build, even if it isn't a genre I'd typically work on. Paul's courses have all been top notch. I really appreciate how in this course he stays completely within the box in Reason and doesn't use any rack extensions (REs). If you're just starting to learn Reason and want to build a song, this is probably a better starting point than the "First Song with Reason" course, since that one does use a bunch of REs (but is still great).

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I've been working with computers and music from probably around five or six, when my parents first got an Atari with Cubase 2.0! Been hooked ever since.

2. What training have you had?

Mostly it comes from my parents. They're both songwriters and producers, so I grew up watching them and learning in their studio. More recently, just self-taught really.

3. When did you get into recording?

I guess I first started taking it seriously when I was around 15 or 16, which is when it became a bit more feasible to actually record at home and go beyond GM. That's when I started picking up other instruments aside from keyboard, guitar, bass, drums.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've just started working with the guys over at Red Bull Media House and am on my second album with them now! Some of my sound design work has found its way to the studios over at the likes of Blizzard, and I've done a great deal of custom composition and production music for library music companies both here in the UK and in the Unites States.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I just love helping people out I guess! Through my personal music projects I've connected with thousands of fans from across the world, and most of them are aspiring producers and musicians themselves. So it's nice to be part of a wider community of creative people and help them along the way, as others helped me.
