  • Introduction & Interface 4:55

    Introduction & Interface

In this first video, Larry introduces the concept of the plugin, explains the interface, and outlines how to work with presets.

  • Upper & Lower Panels & VCOs 1 & 2 9:00

    Upper & Lower Panels & VCOs 1 & 2

Next up, explore the VCOs, which allow us to build up our sounds from raw waveforms. Also learn about the panel select options, enabling sound layering for bigger sounds.

  • VCO Modulator & LFO Section 9:25

    VCO Modulator & LFO Section

Discover the VCO modulator in this video and how it can be used to generate vibrato effects. Larry also covers the LFO settings and parameters.

  • HPF, VCF, & VCA 8:02

    HPF, VCF, & VCA

Larry covers the HPF and VCF next, which allow you to sculpt the timbre of the two VCOs using additional modulators. He then covers the VCA and the ways in which amplitude can be modulated.

  • Envelopes 4:00

Move on to the envelopes and learn how to sculpt the contour of the amplitude and other modulatable parameters on the synth.

  • Panel Controls 6:40

    Panel Controls

Explore the panel controls, which can be changed independently for each panel.

  • Panel Modes 6:09

    Panel Modes

Next up is the panel modes, which allow you to layer sounds in different ways. Contained here are also the assign modes and arpeggiator.

  • Master Settings 4:15

    Master Settings

Larry covers the master settings next: parameters that can be altered for both panels of the synthesizer.

  • MIDI Learn 2:54

    MIDI Learn

Learn how to map parameters to MIDI controllers for hands-on control over the synth.

  • Analogue Kick Drum Sound 5:28

    Analogue Kick Drum Sound

Larry creates an analogue sine/noise-based kick drum sound in this video.

  • Fat Retro Bass 3:30

    Fat Retro Bass

Next is a two-oscillator fat bass sound, which is then arpeggiated for added rhythmic interest.

  • Pad Sound 4:59

    Pad Sound

Follow along as Larry creates a thick analog stacked pad sound using pulse width modulation and a slow attack envelope.

  • Sync Lead Sound 4:10

    Sync Lead Sound

Finally, Larry closes out the course by synthesizing a sync oscillator lead sound with the two oscillators tuned a fifth apart.

Product Overview

Virtual instrument expert Larry Holcombe presents comprehensive TAL-J-8 video tutorials! If you're a fan of TAL Software's incredibly accurate emulation of the Jupiter 8, but you're a bit overwhelmed by the dizzying array of sliders, knobs, and buttons, this is the course to watch! Larry breaks down each component of the plugin in detail, covering all the important features and functions, and also demonstrates them in action by creating several different inspiring sounds. These videos are for new TAL-J-8 users.

Larry welcomes you and begins by explaining the plugin's concept and walking through the interface, along with showing you how to work with the onboard presets. You'll explore the VCOs (oscillators) next and learn how the raw waveforms can be combined, tweaked, and layered to build the basis of your sound. Then discover the VCO Modulator, and how it can generate vibrato effects, along with the LFO (low frequency oscillator) settings and parameters.

Next, Larry covers the HPF (high pass filter) and VCF (voltage-controlled filter), both of which allow further sculpting of the tone via frequency carving. You'll then explore the VCA (amplifier) and learn how its parameters can be modulated over time to create movement in the sound.

Throughout the rest of the course, you'll examine the synth's other many features, including envelopes, panel controls, panel modes, master settings, MIDI learn, and more! Finish up the course by following along as Larry builds four sounds -- kick, bass, pad, and lead -- on the synth so you can see how it all comes together!
