The Concept of Blocks & PolyStep

To start with we'll look at the concept of blocks and how they can be used to create quick arrangements and re-usable song sections. You'll also get introduced to the PolyStep sequencer player device to input sequences that would otherwise be too fast to play in realtime.

  • image description 3:28

    Bassline & Pads

Next we'll move onto the bassline and pad elements, as well as how to use MIDI input to transpose the PolyStep Sequencer.

  • image description 7:41

    Sound Design & Automation

Now explore some initial sound design to create more inspiring bass and pluck sounds, as well as the Layers device for pads. I'll also touch on some creative use of automation to add filter frequency movement.

  • image description 4:28

    Build Up & Melodic Piano

Next up we'll move on to the pre chorus build up, as well as develop a melodic piano motif that can be used throughout the song.

  • image description 8:11

    Programming the Drums

Here we'll look at extracting drum hits from REX loops to build a kit in Kong, as well as using the Drum Sequencer to sequence Trap style hats alongside conventional note clips.

  • image description 4:47

    Synth Parts & Housekeeping

Moving on, we'll design a basic patch in the included West Coast Modular synth, Complex 1. I'll also do a bit of track organization and housekeeping as well as test out an arrangement using the Blocks lane.

  • image description 4:37

    Working the Arrangement

In this video, we'll adapt the intro section into a verse section, using stripped down and adapted drums from the chorus section.

  • image description 5:40

Beefing Up the Bass & Arpeggio

Next we'll look at improving the sound of the bass in the chorus section using a Combinator to layer multiple devices as well as addressing some issues with the arpeggio patch.

  • image description 5:27

    More Sound Design

Now see how to use the Karplus Strong string model in Europa to design a punchy percussive bass sound. We'll also develop the transition section and start to create some ambiance using the Grain sampler.

  • image description 4:49

    Arrangement Tips & Tricks

Focusing on the final chorus now, see how to create the illusion of a tempo increase using increasing subdivisions of time and the multi-draw tool, as well as programming some new drums for the final section.

  • image description 7:19

    Sidechaining & Multi-Outs

Watch how to use Sweeper to build a CV triggered side-chaining machine for quick, no-hassle volume ducking with precise control of the shape of the effect. I'll also start to split the drums out to their own channels for further mixing.

  • image description 8:19

    Vocals & FX

Drawing to a close, explore inserting a short vocal phrase and using the Slice Warp functions to bring it onto the musical grid, as well as how to use Neptune to formant shift the sample for a more synthetic effect.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I've been working with computers and music from probably around five or six, when my parents first got an Atari with Cubase 2.0! Been hooked ever since.

2. What training have you had?

Mostly it comes from my parents. They're both songwriters and producers, so I grew up watching them and learning in their studio. More recently, just self-taught really.

3. When did you get into recording?

I guess I first started taking it seriously when I was around 15 or 16, which is when it became a bit more feasible to actually record at home and go beyond GM. That's when I started picking up other instruments aside from keyboard, guitar, bass, drums.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've just started working with the guys over at Red Bull Media House and am on my second album with them now! Some of my sound design work has found its way to the studios over at the likes of Blizzard, and I've done a great deal of custom composition and production music for library music companies both here in the UK and in the Unites States.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I just love helping people out I guess! Through my personal music projects I've connected with thousands of fans from across the world, and most of them are aspiring producers and musicians themselves. So it's nice to be part of a wider community of creative people and help them along the way, as others helped me.
