Detect Key Signature with Mixed In Key Studio Edition

In this video, we'll use Mixed In Key Studio Edition to calculate the key signature of our accapella giving us a starting point for our composition.

  • image description 11:25

Creating Drum Grooves with Captain Beat

Next up, we'll create a drum groove using Captain Beat. A preset pattern is taken and then edited to fine tune the groove. The drum hits are also tweaked to fit the vibe of the track.

  • image description 4:26

Creating Drum Fills Using Captain Beat

Now we'll create 2 drum fills using the brand new drum fill feature in Captain Beat. These are placed in the verse and pre-chorus section to allow us to flick between them.

  • image description 12:44

    Importing & Tuning Drums

In this video, we add in some custom drum hits to help the drums match the artistic vision. We then use Mixed In Key Studio Edition to try tuning our kicks and toms so that they are tonally suited to the key of the track.

  • image description 9:48

    Chords Pt. 1

Now we use Captain Chords chord selection process to map out a chord progression for the verse section of the track. We then experiment with rhythm presets to find a rhythmic structure for the progression.

  • image description 14:38

    Chords Pt. 2

In this second part on chords in Captain Chords, we try out a progression using preset progressions and timings. Then we use the play mode to jam out a progression using our computer keyboard. Finally we use the MIDI keyboard to experiment with a progression which we then input using the custom option.

  • image description 10:40

    Chord Rhythm

Now it's time to make a decision regarding our chord ideas and then add a custom rhythm to the progression using the rhythm record feature.

  • image description 14:40

    Chord Arrangement

Next up, we export MIDI from Captain Chords to allow us to arrange the various sections in Logic Pro. We'll also program one more alternative progression to use in the arrangement.

  • image description 9:42

    Chord Editing in the DAW

In this last video on our harmonic backdrop, we do a final amendment of the chords using MIDI in Logic Pro?s Piano Roll.

  • image description 11:03

    Arranging Beats from Captain Beat

Now see how to export our drums from Captain Beat and arrange the main loops and fills to create interest in the main drum arrangement.

  • image description 11:32

    Adding a Bassline Pt. 1

Watch how to use Captain Deep locked to Captain Chords to automatically generate a bassline for our main section, which is then added to the arrangement and tweaked to fit the groove.

  • image description 8:49

    Adding a Bassline Pt. 2

Now we'll add a second bassline that completes our B section chords, and then add it to Logic Pro for further tweaking and fitment.

  • image description 13:14

    Adding a Melody

In this video, we use the idea function of Captain Melody to create a simple melody using fifths and roots of our chords, and arrange them rhythmically to complement our other elements.

  • image description 12:28

    Arpeggiation Pt. 1

Next up, we'll enlist the help of Xfer records Cthulhu to create some interesting rhythmic arpeggiator sequences that follow our chords. We'll then tweak the parts by switching off steps and experimenting with patterns vs note numbers.

  • image description 18:08

    Arpeggiation Pt. 2

In the second part on the Cthulhu arpeggiator, we cover randomizing the sequence, changing octave for steps, adding custom pitch, groove and gate times and also ways to add harmony on a step by step basis.

  • image description 7:51

    Detecting Chords Using Scaler 2

Here we introduce a new concept of using the chord detection feature of Scaler 2 to work out the harmony of an electric piano part. See how!

  • image description 7:00

    Quick & Dirty Melodies

In this final video, we'll go through a very simple way of ensuring that you stay in key and write harmonious melodies by drawing in reference scales in Logic Pro's piano roll.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
