  • image description 12:03

    Using Vocal Assistant

In this video, learn how to use Vocal Assistant in Nectar 3 to analyze the lead vocal and create a suitable preset which is then tweaked. Afterwards, see how to use Vintage Tape and Vintage EQ to add a smooth high end.

  • image description 7:12

    The Vocal Harmony

Now discover Nectar 3's Pitch Correction module and how to fix the pitch of our harmony and then use Vocal Assistant to fit the harmony into the mix.

  • image description 9:40

    Drums: EQ Pt. 1

Learn how to use Neutron 2 to EQ your drum parts and bring them out of the mix, including how the Learn Mode is used to locate areas of interest in the frequency range.

  • image description 7:44

    Drums: EQ Pt. 2

In this video, Larry picks up where he left of in the last video and continues working on EQing the drums.

  • image description 10:57

    Bass & Guitars

Watch Larry start off by using the Learn Mode on Neutron 2's Transient Shaper on the snare to locate areas to work on. Next up Larry applies EQ to the bass part of the track using the Track Assistant mode of Neutron 2. Larry then looks for areas to cut and boost in order to fit the bass into the track effectively, including using the Neutron 2 Compressor to keep the bass in its place in the mix, allowing it to act as a foundation. You?ll also see Larry work on the various guitar parts using Neutron 2.

  • image description 7:06

    Piano, Organ & Percussion

In this video, discover how to use Track Assistant in Neutron 2 to work on the piano and organ parts, and then try a Dynamic EQ on the tambourine part in the fix to tame some harshness.

  • image description 9:37

Using Compression in Neutron 2 Pt. 1

Larry now explains how to use compression to set the front back perspective of the mix. See how to use Detection Filters to allow the compressor to respond to the correct parts of the signal. You'll then see how to use different Bypass States for different settings, and use the Vintage Compressor of Ozone 8 to compress the bass, piano and organ.

  • image description 9:20

Using Compression in Neutron 2 Pt. 2

In this video, Larry picks up where he left off in the last video and continues his work using compression in Neutron 2.

  • image description 14:35

    Additive EQ

In this video, Larry goes over the steps to use Additive EQ to pick and enhance different areas of sounds so they shine. For this task you'll use the Vintage EQ of Ozone 8 and also the soft saturation mode of Neutron 2. Lastly, Larry demonstrates how to use the Masking Meter to keep elements from stepping on each other, and mudding up the mix.

  • image description 13:18

    Harmonic Saturation

Watch Larry now perform some housekeeping to organize the tracks, and then add Saturation to Busses to energize the mix and make it come alive. We also add EQ to our saturation to really focus it in. We also try different modes in Neutron 2's Exciter.

  • image description 12:17

    Mix Enhancements

In this video, have some fun trying out some things with iZotope Suite like Side-Chaining the bass and kick, but only compressing the low frequencies of the bass part. Then experiment with the Vocal Unmask feature to bring the vocals out to the front of the mix. Lastly, Larry demonstrates how to use Neutron to bring a little more out of the different parts.

  • image description 18:26

    Bus Processing & Parallel Compression

Larry now shows how to use Neutron 2's Compressor to add Parallel Compression to the parts, solidifying the mix. Bus Compression is then utilized to add a further layer of Compression to the mix, by applying Compression to grouped parts.

  • image description 13:21

    Mastering the Track Pt. 1

In this video, Larry shows and explains how to use Tonal Balance from Ozone 8 to apply Master Bus Processing to make the track as balanced as possible. See how to use an assortment of iZotope’s amazing plug-ins to bring a track to life, resulting in a professional radio-ready mix. You also get the stems used in the tutorial to follow along with and mix on your system.

Larry begins by welcoming you and then starts at the beginning, going over the steps to take to get Tonal Balance Control setup in your session, and then fixing any issues with individual tracks before you start mixing, plus figuring out your vision for the mix.

Then it’s off to the races, and Larry explores and explains using Vocal Assistant on the Vocals, Pitch Correction with Nectar, EQing and Transient Shaping with Neutron, utilizing Track Assistant on different parts, and using Neutron’s compressor Detection Filters to compress only the parts of the signal that need it, and much more.

Next, Larry goes over the steps to use Additive EQ to pick and enhance different areas of sounds and make them shine, including adding Saturation and an Exciter to Busses to energize the mix and make it come alive. Then it’s off to the land of squeeze, where you’ll see how to use Side-Chaining on the bass and kick, but only compress the low frequencies of the bass part, applying Bus Processing and Parallel Compression, and Mastering the track with Ozone’s Multi Band Compression, Harmonic Excitation and Parallel Compression.

Wrapping it up, you’ll learn how to use Master Assistant to set parameters while referencing the original artist’s version for comparison, and then add extra Stereo Width Processing to the track to slightly spread the frequencies above 10k, giving it that final polished sound.

Useful Overview!

Great insights into using Izotope's tools in a workflow context, and tips on listening and sculpting stems with them. One thing: I don't understand why many tracks have duplicate instances of Neutron on them?

Helpful or not, it nerves...

I stopped watching after the 5th chapter. Looping only one bar for editing stuff makes sense. But listening to this 40times was killing me.

Hi,
I'm very sorry you did not finish watching the tutorial. You may find as you do more and more mixing that listening to a piece of recorded music multiple times over is part of the process. Sometimes it's your music and sometimes it's a clients but anyone who has spent time in a studio (home or professional) will attest to spending minutes, hours on one section getting it right.
As you get used to the process, I encourage you to finish this series and you will see that the lessons are true to a professional workflow and can be very helpful to those trying to take things to the next level.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
