    Intro

Let’s take a listen to the song we will be mixing with Neutron… only.

  • image description 11:39

    The Foundation

First let’s start with the basics. We can use Neutron to bring clarity and punch.

  • image description 5:56

    The Room

Next let’s bring in the room mics. Neutron’s compressors bring the drums to life.

  • image description 6:36

    Finishing the Drums

Now we can round out all the other close mics. Let’s focus on the toms.

  • image description 9:49

    Guitars

Let’s see how Neutron can enhance clean and crunchy guitars.

  • image description 10:08

    Synths & Effects

Our song had a couple lead synth lines. Let’s make sure they are heard and fit in.

  • image description 15:20

    Vocals

Now let’s spend some time with our stacks and harmonies. The trick here is to keep the lead vocal out front.

  • image description 7:24

    Master Bus

Now let’s work on the stereo mix. We can add glue and loudness with Neutron’s compressors and limiter.

Product Overview

Scottie Dugan follows up “Neutron Explained” with a video tutorial series on mixing a pop rock track exclusively with iZotope Neutron. See how you can now mix your own tracks easily with awesome results!

Scottie begins by playing you the song you’ll be mixing together, followed by revealing the basic steps to add clarity and punch.

The drums are then gone over, and Scottie uses Neutron to bring them to life as well as tame them. Guitars, Synths and effects are then explored and Neutron is applied to make them fit and sit just right.

Scottie then uses Neutron on the vocals to make them stand out and be the focus of the track. Finally, Scottie moves to the master bus, dialing in Neutron to add the “glue” that makes the track sound finished and polished.

See the individual tutorial descriptions below for more info. If you’re ready to mix your first track with Neutron, check “Mixing Pop Rock with Neutron” out and be prepared to rock your mix!

Interesting

This really ticked all the boxes. Clear and precise as well as informative this tutorial showcases the power of Neutron. I would love to see a follow up video of how to use Neutron withother plugins such as reverb and so on. What do we do if we want to use “vintage” EQ, Compressors, and Effects. There is so much more to learn.

Great Help

Very useful example of using Neutron for a beginner such as myself . Well explained and presented . Only slight criticism was audio files could have been arranged in various Daw formats as projects, so the various bus and aux channels he uses were replicated in for example Logic X . This would have saved a lot of time .But apart from that a worth while exercise and learning tool .?

Fantastic tutorial!

This video was amazing, great job! You were able to do an incredible amount with just 1 plugin (Albeit a versatile one). That track assistant is freakin' awesome!

Future of Mixing?

Scott did a great job on series. This song tutorial along with Neutron Explained really gives you all you need to understand the power of Neutron. I couldn't help but notice that Neutrino was not changing with the instrument tracks. Stayed on Clear...don't know if this was by design or not but thought I would point it out...

Do we really need such trashy lyrics?

I'm disappointed in Groove3 for hosting a tutorial using a song with such foul lyrics. Not everyone is bicoastal and ready for what Scottie calls, "let's get to the juicy part." It reflects a coarse disdain of others sensibilities and is gratuitous ... lot's of songs could easily have been chosen lacking the 'ef bomb.'

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I grew up taking classical piano lessons, so music has always been a part of my life. It started out as a daily chore and eventually evolved into a passion. Now I am very lucky to call it my profession.

2. What training have you had?

After thirteen years of private piano lessons I decided to pursue a formal degree. Two years in and I realized it wasn't for me. From that point on a began teaching myself and taking various online courses that offered subjects that excited me. I've gotten to learn and sit under individuals who are way better than I am.

3. When did you get into recording?

Ableton Live and the ability to make music with a computer were the two biggest reasons I didn't continue pursue a formal degree. I was in a band, we cut a DIY "garage album" and that started the obsession. The once obscured world of synths, hardware and software was now overwhealming as I transitioned away from a piano only mindset.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I have the great privilege to be working with Ableton as one of their Ableton Certified Trainers. Being a part of that community has been really amazing and life changing. I have yet to work with anyone rich and famous... but I have a feeling one day some of these crazy talented people will be. I get to work with students and artists who are chasing their musical dreams. I like the purity and passion that comes with that.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well, I've always been told that I'm a good teacher but I hated talking to people I didn't know. It took a while to get over those introvert tendencies and fear of public speaking and now I can't get enough. Watching a student get that lightbulb breakthrough or seeing an ignition of passion after the transfer of knowledge creates such a sense of fulfillment for me. I can't not teach.
