Pro music producer and engineer Laurence Holcombe takes you on a mastering journey with iZotope Ozone 8! See and hear how Ozone 8 can be used in numerous different ways to improve your mixes, as well as see it in action, mastering a wide variety of different genres of music.

Larry starts by welcoming you and introduces what you’ll be doing in the video series, and also talks a little about the philosophy of mastering and track evaluation.

Next, Larry hits the ground running and shows you how to evaluate the tonal balance of the mix using Ozone 8’s amazing Tonal Balance Control, and then covers the different options and views found in Ozone 8.

You’ll then explore how to use Mastering Assistant to automatically master your track and look at the different parameters available for this process, as well as how to setup for Referencing and EQ Matching.

Larry also covers in detail Codecs & Mono Compatibly, the Spectral Shaper, how to fix a dull and lifeless mix, Controlling Frequency Density, the different Vintage Tools, Balancing Using the Dynamics Module and much more.

Wrapping it up, Larry gives you full mastering videos on how he masters different genres such as Tech House, Disco House, Pop, Rock, and a Singer / Songwriter type track.

Very informative and smart.

Very well done tutorial. Who would believe that it will be so easy to master track by yourself without mountain of speakers and perfect room. This guy is very patient and smooth. Very good process and set up in Logic X and Ozone. 2 thumbs up..

Well thought out course. Does not get into the weeds on each Ozone module but does provide practical real world mastering examples. Requires good monitor system or headphones. Only suggestion would be a little more explanation as to why certain modules or tools were used to solve sonic issues versus others...

Very useful, hands-on video - though could be slightly improved.

Good structure to the lesson - but the instructor isn't really sharing his experience with the tweaks, as well as I would have liked. He's kind of a quiet guy. A good idea would have been to provide summaries at the end of each video. The case studies are quite useful, but I felt that the instructor wasn't really getting into the nuts and bolts of the program. He should provide a wrap-up at the end of each case study, like "OK, here we had a pop track that was mid-range and subs weak, and the high frequencies were to harsh. We corrected that with the EQ and Dynamic EQ, and added some stereo width with the Imager, " etc. Recap the specific fixes for each problem. Otherwise, pretty good.

More than more

These are some of the most enlightening tutorials I have seen on mastering. The are 1/99 times where I fail to hear the differences that the narrator talks about but that is probably because I have very little knowledge of mixing and mastering. The tutorials are also very helpful in the decision to purchase Ozone (before this, I thought it was ridiculously overpriced).

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)
