In this in-depth tutorial series, Adam Pollard aka Multiplier explains Native Instruments’ game changing KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series MIDI controller inside and out, showing you the basics, how to use it with both NI libraries and 3rd party plug-ins and more!

Multiplier begins with an overview of the layout of the S-Series keyboards, as well as how to install the software you’ll need. That leads directly into a video on how to load instruments into the S-Series, and use the browse filters when searching through presets.

From there, Multiplier explores the creative tools you get with the S-Series. See how Scale Smart Play allows you to always play in key and to trigger chords, and how Arp Smart Play allows you to turn a chord into an arpeggio.

You’ll then learn how you can use the KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series to control your DAW and use Smart Play with plug-ins that aren’t part of the KOMPLETE KONTROL software bundle. After that, Multiplier teaches you how to record the output of Smart Play as MIDI into your DAW.

Wrapping it up, Multiplier demonstrates how to load 3rd party NKS-ready instruments into the KOMPLETE KONTROL software and onto the hardware, and how to create and use Favorites when auditioning and selecting sounds in the browser.

If you’re new to the KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series MIDI Controllers, or if you want more tips and tricks to get the most out of it, watch “KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series Explained” today!

Not up to date and too simple

I did not find this tutorial very helpful, I don't think it deserves the 'explained' label, as it is not very deep. The functionalities described can be found on youtube also. Furthermore, this tutorial is not up to date as the KK software has many more possibilities now, including browsing ON the keyboard. I was hoping for an in depth look into the software, actually, like how to edit the control scheme and how to import 3rd party, non-NKS libraries. Too bad, maybe some time later.

Response from Customer Service:

Hi and thank you for leaving us a review! We appreciate you taking the time.
As you may have seen, this is one of our older tutorials and could certainly use an update at this point. We have it on the schedule with one of our authors and hope to have something new on the site soon.
Thanks again and make sure you get the weekly newsletter so you can see when it's released!

Well, got one useful tip

I think it would have been more relevant for me if the author had been a keyboard musician. Also, the author could have spent more time familiarizing himself with his material.

Useless

Not up to Groove3 standards. Host seems clueless. Quick search will reveal that he doesn't like the product he is "teaching." And it shows.

Response from Customer Service:

Hi David and we're very sorry you did not get what you wanted out of this tutorial. It is a basic overview of the controller so I'm happy to add a customer request for a more advanced look into this.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I started producing music just over 5 years ago, right about when Skrillex's Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP dropped.

2. What training have you had?

I'm fully self-taught, and haven't had any formal training. I use online resources and learn a lot by talking to other producers about how they do things too.

3. When did you get into recording?

(same answer as number 1)

4. People you have worked with/for?

DJTechTools, iZotope, Output, CAPSUN Pro Audio, Loopmasters, Plugin Boutique, Industrial Strength, 5Pin Media

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I've had a lot of experience in the EDM space, from producing tracks and sample packs that have charted on sites like Beatport, through to DJing internationally and running a record label. And on the training side I've produced thousands of tutorials, and also tutor people one to one.

Rated 2.0 out of 5 by from Not very thorough Was looking at this because I was trying to decide if I would buy an S-Series keyboard ( the 88 key ). Almost from the beginning I questioned the accuracy because he said that there was no difference between the different versions, but the 88 key is the only one with fully weighted keys. I was hoping that he would spend some time going into the general MIDI configuration, for adding control of non-NKS ready items. Just seemed pretty thin overall.

Rated 2.0 out of 5 by from Much left out Though a good overview of the most basic features, the various "Shift" features were given short shrift, as were many of the other features. This video was made with little actual experience behind it (Look up, "Why I hate Kontrol S-Series Keyboards" on YouTube to see the fumbling, made well after the making of this video series.)

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Excellent review Late last year I was deciding betweek AKAI & S61 keyboards. I watched a good video to help me decide. Although I was leaning to S61 as I have so much NI software. However, I decided to give Adam's tutorial a go as I've enjoyed his dance music tutorials. I was astonished at how much I didn't know. Virtually ever video taught me something new & really usefull. Thanks Adam.
