Curated from the free Into The Lair (ITL) video tutorial series, Grammy Award–winning mix engineer Dave Pensado shows you awesome tips and tricks on the art of mixing. With so many specifics to mixing, it’s sometimes better to take a broad-stroke approach to mixing as a whole. In these general-mixing-focused ITL episodes, Dave goes through the essentials to get your mixes starting on the right foot.
Dave starts with the top ten mistakes someone makes on a mix and how to avoid making them, training your ear to hear certain frequencies, mixing a song based on its style, how to properly use reference mixes and dissecting a mix and learning from the original sonic choices.
Dave then covers compression ratios and characteristics, taming low frequencies and getting them sounding balanced in your mix, and applying master techniques for better dynamics. Mixing is truly an art form and Dave is a master.
Moving on, Dave covers mixing a song based on style and sonic decisions, training your ears to identify frequencies for EQing, and identifying the top five things to do for every mix. Wrapping it up, Dave reveals how to get your stereo tracks sounding wide, enhancing elements of a mix, and adjusting you mixes to be better suited for the mastering process.
These Into The Lair episodes will make sure you know where you’re going as you start to pull up the faders on your mix!

Dave provides a different perspective to mixing
Most of the tutorials I've seen about mixing have been 'how-to's, but few have provided a philosophy. This series does provide a different way to look at mixing. I think it's great. And Dave's easy going style makes it a pleasure to watch and learn.
