Product Overview

Curated from the free Into The Lair (ITL) video tutorial series, Grammy Award–winning mix engineer Dave Pensado drills down on teaching you how to get your drums sounding just right!

Without a strong drum sound, it’s harder to achieve a strong rhythm and groove within a mix. Topics covered include adding punch to your kick, snares, and toms, shaping transients to give your drums depth and life, getting your 808s to hit right and achieving perfect balance between live and programmed drums.

Dave also goes over mixing various types of kick drums, bringing your live recordings to life, mixing drum room tracks to make them sit better with the kit, mixing hi-hat tracks and the secret to getting your kick and bass to fit in the same frequency range.

Dave then covers making cymbals fit perfectly in the mix, humanizing digital tracks for feel and groove, parallel compression techniques to bring elements to life, and retaining transients when using limiters.

Dave digs in deeper and goes over mixing big drums for maximum impact, new approaches to using sidechain compression techniques, balancing bass and kicks with EQ tricks, creating samples from your drum recording sessions, achieving the ’80s snare drum sound and creating drum loops for your productions.

Wrapping it all up Dave demonstrates mixing 808 kick drums to fit in your mix better, triggering effects on your drum tracks using samples, mixing massive kick drums, mixing big, fat snares to glue into your mix perfectly, creating and using reverse snare drums in your mix and fixing your drum transients.

As a bonus, this series also includes an episode in which Greg Wells and Ian MacGregor share their drum tracking process… Prepare to take your drum mixes to the next level!

This is great and its free -- why complain?

Thanks for this curated version of Dave's free online tutorials. Dave's tips are fantastic and his enthusiasm is infectious. And it's free here, what's to complain about? Sometimes I don't understand the entitlement of so many so-called "reviewers" who come here to complain about things that no one in their right mind would ever do. So never mind the haters, and thanks for putting this together in a clear, concise form for us. Looking forward to Dave's new content!

Response from Groove3:

Hello, thank you for your feedback on how we can improve our library. I am not sure if you have the newsletter, but part of us announcing and bringing Dave and his team on board is there is exclusive content in the works for the Groove3 platform. We also try to add value to existing Into the Lair videos by curating them and putting them into our system for ease-of-use, for free to anyone with a registered Groove3 account, as well as user with an All-Access Pass. We are continuing to release lots of new paid only or exclusive content, each week and are only going to increase the amount of that content. I do appreciate your points on how we can improve that content as well, with more courses on mixing and topics that span use across multiple DAWs and plug-ins. This is at the forefront of our mind and I think you will continue to see improvement in those areas in the months to come. Thank you again for your feedback and being a Groove3 customer.

Dave Pensado is one of the recording industry’s preeminent mix engineers. With multiple Grammy nominations and wins under his belt, Dave has had an astounding career. Christina Aguilera, Pink, Shakira, Beyoncé, Flo Rida, Afrojack, Frank Ocean, and more are a fraction of the superstars who keep Dave on speed dial. From pop to hip hop, country to Latin, and R&B to alternative, Dave’s special niche is making radio-friendly records while enhancing artistic intent.

In 2010, Dave and his manager started a web series entitled Pensado's Place. The show is wildly popular, is seen in over 150 countries by 600,000 people a month, and is used as curriculum in over 100 colleges around the globe. Every week audio artisans who work with superstars like Coldplay, Kanye West, Rascal Flatts, and more join Dave to discuss all things audio. The show has been featured in Forbes, Huffington Post, Boston Globe, and Last Call with Carson Daly among others.

With all the success, what is Dave’s favorite part of his career? "Nothing is better than being able to teach," says Pensado. "The ability to share and watch it positively impact a life is incredibly powerful." It’s that ethos that makes Dave so revered by his peers and makes him a legend to his fans.
