Very Basic Halion6 explanation on a couple of features

I like the presenter's style and work flow. The videos go over just a few of the basic features of Halion6. Seemed very incomplete after I finished watching the series. While it gave a very basic starting point, it could have been so much more.

Fantastic intro to Halion 6

I've had Halion 6 for a while. At first, as many will say, the UI is overwhelming. I've been able to slog through it, but this video course unveils all the basic functionality REQUIRED for using Halion 6. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I would LOVE to see more Halion 6 video courses by this presenter. Especially creating new libraries using existing sample sets.

Great for getting started

I had a mid-level working knowledge of Halion 5 mostly from the perspective of handling (orchestral) sample libraries. This tutorial was a great intro to Halion 6 as well as introducing me to other aspects of this instrument. This presenter is very good at going through the high level features in moderate depth. If you are looking for an in-depth tutorial on creating patches, I highly recommend another tutorial here on Groove3 called Halion 5: From Scratch to Patch.

The basics

This is really just a getting started series. Well done for what it is. I realize most keyboard players want to know how to create unique synth sounds most of all. Great, but there are already literally hundreds a videos on YouTube covering mostly the same material. As primarily an acoustic musician, I am always searching for videos on building complex acoustic instruments using samples. This would seem to be the most elemental functionality in Halion, but I can not find a single video series covering building an instrument with multiple velocity layers, multiple samples per note played round robin or randomly, and with separate samples for fret or reed noise, note cutoff, etc. I know Halion is capable of all this and more. Halion 6 also introduces the ability to build a complete instrument with its own custom GUI that can be exported and sold. How about one series for each one of these?

Response from Customer Service:

Hello and thanks for leaving a review for us! We really appreciate that.
I'm very glad you think this tutorial is well done and yes, this is a basic getting started lesson for those just jumping in. I'm sorry you felt that it only deserved a 2.5 rating but more tutorials will be coming for the Know How series. Stay tuned.
And I have added a request to our customer request list for a tutorial using samples.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I've been a musician since a very early age starting with playing the trumpet, guitar, bass, and piano. Not the drums though, my brother got those genes. I am an excellent finger drummer though to say the least!

2. What training have you had?

For formal training I took regular music lessons in grade school and high school which were fortified with training from private tutors. After school I joined the Army band and went through the Army School of Music as well. I'd like to say that most of what I've learned though came through experience and having hands-on opportunities.

3. When did you get into recording?

During my stay in the Army I was the live sound manager. I loved operating the mixing board but I loathed the 'live' environment. I truly enjoyed making things sound great but I didn't like the fact that there is so little room for error in the live setting. I had wished for more time to invest in being able to make something that sounds ok, turn into something phenomenal. I started by recording our Army band performances on a Yamaha AW1600 for fun, but really enjoyed that I could capture that moment then take my time to make it sound amazing without having to worry about the crowd booing. The rest is history!

4. People you have worked with/for?

A few musical highlights have been running live sound for the President of the US, and doing some on the side tech work for the band Dope. I also was able to work with Virus on one of his side projects. Over the years though my focus has been mainly in customer service and tech, so I've talked with thousands of industry professionals on a daily basis which have truly been too numerous to name individually.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Growing up I always felt that I spent a lot of time training myself how to do things, but oddly enough I always thought I'd never make a great teacher even though I'm a geek through and through. In the early part of my career I turned down so many opportunities to teach music and engineering. I think part of that came with my own insecurity of not having the formal education that society tells us that we need to succeed. It took a lot of time, practice, and personal education to get me past that hump of feeling confident in trusting that what I taught myself was legit. I've finally reached a point where I feel like I have a lot to offer in terms of knowledge, but most of it has come through investing the time with having the hands on experience that not even formally educated people get sometimes. I truly believe the best way to learn something is to get your hands on it and immerse yourself in every little detail. Groove 3 is a great avenue to be able to share that knowledge.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Just Enough Detail I'm new to Halion 6 and Cubase Pro 9, so I'm still feeling things out. I got a very good handle on how to load presets, along with multiple presets in one instance in Halion 6, along with creating MIDI tracks to control the different presets. I think I learned as much about Cubase as I did about Halion in the process. The programming of sounds was a little over my head for the immediate time being, but I did appreciate the basics of doing that as it seems very worthwhile to learn. I did get the gist of editing an existing sound and for the time being I'll stick with that. So many things! Halion is very deep and one quick view of a video series is not going to make me a Halion Ninja Master. Great video, very well paced, easy to follow until things get complicated. I'm much more capable because of it.
