Electronic Music Producer’s Guide: Dynamics & Compression
-
0:49
Introduction
Multiplier welcomes you and goes over what the series is all about.
-
3:05
What is Compression?
Discover what is compression, and what are dynamics, as well as why do we compress sounds.
-
3:29
Why Compression?
This video explains why compression is talked about so much in the music production world. Basically, real life sounds are more dynamic than we would like for electronic music.
-
2:14
Limiters
Learn all about limiters, the simplest type of compressor.
-
1:45
Compression Basics
Learn how a compressor works (attack, release, ratio, threshold), and see and hear a simple example of it in action.
-
1:15
Ratio
Develop an understanding of what compression "ratio" actually does.
-
4:13
Attack Time & Makeup Gain
Attack time is the most important parameter. Learn about this, as well as compressor "makeup gain".
-
2:02
Combining Makeup Gain & Limiters
Compressors often make mistakes, and so it can be useful to combine makeup gain, and limiters. Multiplier shows you how.
-
4:28
Setting Release Time
Learn how to set release time, by understanding what happens when it's too fast, and too slow.
-
3:27
Each Compressor Behaves Differently
Compressors don't do exactly what you tell them to do. This video shows three examples. Attack/release times, Ableton's Glue compressor, and a limiter that doesn't "limit".
-
3:51
Input High Pass Filtering
Multiplier explains what this is, and why it's so powerful, by explaining how we hear different frequencies, differently.
-
3:20
Saturating with Analog Compressors
Discover how "analog" compressors saturate, and how they can also be a bit unpredictable.
-
1:41
Don't Always Use a Compressor
Here, Multiplier gives three examples showing how you shouldn't view every situation, as an opportunity to use a compressor.
-
2:12
Compressing Inconsistent Audio
Multiplier discusses why you must be careful when compressing inconsistent audio, such as reverb!
-
8:02
How Much to Compress
Quite simply, how much should you compress? Multiplier reveals all.
-
1:33
Distortion as Compression
Learn how it can sometimes be better to use distortion, instead of compression to tame signals - usually on drums or basses.
-
1:11
Gates
Multiplier gives you an introduction to gates.
-
2:05
Transient Shapers
Wrapping it up, Multiplier delivers an introduction to transient shapers, and how again, they don't always work as expected.
Product Overview
Adam Pollard aka Multiplier, now focuses on Dynamics and Compressors and how they’re used in the Electronic Music genre to tame signals as well as create interesting effects and colors.
Adam begins by welcoming you and then starts at the beginning, covering what compression and dynamic processors are, as well as why you would want to use them.
Limiters are then looked at and explained, followed by the basic controls found on compressors and limiters such as ratio, attack time & make up gain, release time and more.
Next, Multiplier covers why each compressor behaves differently, how to utilize input high pass filtering for better compression, saturating with analog compressors, and how to compress inconsistent audio.
Lastly, you’ll learn things like how much compression you should really apply, how to use distortion as a compressor, understanding gates, and the basics of transient shapers.
See the individual tutorial descriptions for more info. If you produce electronic music, compression is one of the most important processes you need to understand and know how to apply… Watch “Electronic Music Producer’s Guide: Dynamics & Compression” today.

I love Groove3, and there are a lot of great instructors on here - however, some are guilty of loving their own voice too much and exploring in front of the camera.... Here though; Quick, concise, videos, that teach the technique and move to the next point. Further, his use of the processed waveform, (not just the plugin GUI) really adds to the understanding of how the effect, affects the sound signal - inside the box.

Clear, concise with great examples
I thought sound, waveform, and preset examples were useful. Most useful, is the wisdom gained and shared from experience.

Best Compression Content I Consumed
Compression has been one of the hardest things for me to understand until I watched this video. Now it's quite clear to me what it does in very different scenarios. I love how visual this content was as well as audible. Thank you!
