    Using External MIDI Files

    Using MIDI Loops

As an extension of the last tutorial, here we look at employing Steinberg MIDI loops to enhance and further build the project. We also explore using Chord Track to drive a finger picked acoustic guitar patch in HALion Sonic SE.

    Create Chords from MIDI

After importing a MIDI file from outside of Cubase, we look at the procedure to get Chord Track to work out what chords are used in the MIDI file. We then look at using this chord information to build up a track around that progression.

  • image description 6:00

    Using with EZKeys

Mark digs deeper into using Toontrack’s VSTi to assess how the block structure of Chord Track can be adapted to play chord changes that don’t necessarily fall at bar divisions.

    Using with VariAudio

In this last video, we look at using chords generated by a MIDI file to create multiple VariAudio harmonies that align with these chords.

Product Overview

Cubase has an awesome feature called Chord Track which makes working with chords in your Project Window easy, and allows you to transform and harmonize functions throughout the Cubase application. Steinberg guru Mark Struthers makes understanding and using this powerful feature easy and fast!

Mark begins with a detailed introduction followed by how to edit and modify chords. Next he dives into using the Chord Assistant, showing you the different Modes and Types options. Live Transformers are then shown which enables you to transform chords played live into Cubase and more.

Next, Mark gets into Voicing Choices such as Piano or Guitar, followed by using External MIDI files and how to have them analyzed and transposed by Chord Track. Using MIDI loops with Chord Track is then looked at, and then how to create chords from MIDI. Mark then explains how to get Chord Track to figure out what chords are used in an external MIDI file, and how to build up a track around that new progression, as well as create harmonies.

If you're a Cubase user, you have to know all about this powerful compositional tool. You'll learn a new way to analyze and compose new tracks for your productions and more... Watch "Cubase Chord Track Explained" today.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Excellent Lessons!! I watched this tutorial before but watching it again really enforced the usefulness of the chord track. Only suggestion is learning how to use the chord pads with the chord track. This way you can use the midi keys or keyboard to play the pads. AM13

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by from Good and informative. It was a helpful series of videos, but it is made with Cubase 7.5 - I hope there will be an update with a newer version of Cubase. Still, I learned quite a few things and the instructor is good.

Rated 2.0 out of 5 by from Hard to Follow The instructors British accent/slang forces you to really listen closely and I had to backup/repeat sections over and over many times because I could not figure out the words he had just spoken. The instructors British accent/slang forces you to really listen closely and I had to backup/repeat sections over and over many times because I could not figure out the words he had just spoken. Warning: This is demonstrated in Cubase 7 and EZKeys Version 1 (some things are done differently in both programs now) He skips too many steps without demonstrating, for example: In the lesson "Voicing Choices & Info Line" he says to "simply create something" and does not show you how, the screen blanks out and transitions onward, the problem is I cannot figure out how to do what he said. HINT to the instructor... never ever assume your viewers know how to create a mufti-process procedure especially if it's an integral part of the project the user is creating with you! Or at the very least provide a link or direction on where/how to learn it. He starts lesson 7 "Using MIDI Loops" with something he per-built so it is impossible to try and recreate what he is teaching on screen. There were several more skipped steps/non-demonstrated scattered throughout the course or "movie" as he likes to call it. Nowhere in the course written explanation did it say "you should know how to do such and such first". I did learn some things but half of the lesson was lost due to poor demonstration. Overall it feels like a unprofessional Youtube video and very dated. Sorry, if I had purchased the download of this course I would have asked for a refund. P.S. Groove3 does need an updated EZKeys course, it's version 2 now, very popular and many new changes/features.
