Orchestral wiz Gary Hiebner shows you how to create an epic cinematic composition from scratch, which can be used for a film, game or TV soundtrack. You also get the Logic Pro X project file containing the associated MIDI files allowing you to experiment with your own virtual instruments, as well as the audio stems, so you can compare your sounds against Gary’s!

Gary begins by welcoming you and goes over what you’ll be accomplishing in the video series, as well as plays you the cinematic production you’ll create together. He also goes over the software needed to produce this type of arrangement.

You’ll then jump right in, starting with creating string ostinatos, adding extra strings, horn melodies, brass parts, as well as how to create ambient drone patches to support and mystify the composition.

Crafting the piano motif is next, followed by how to use pulsing instruments to create tension and add pace to the arrangement. Gary then shows you how to add riser effects to build up to the big impact moment in the arrangement, for dramatic effect.

You’ll then continue on and see how to build up percussion parts, add woodwind flourishes, add a choir for a human element, what a Braam is and how make it more complex with strings and a choir, and how to bring back the piano theme at the end of the arrangement to tie it all together.

Concluding the series, Gary demonstrates how to mix it all with proper level setting, automation, EQ, compression and reverb, as well as how to export your creation as a stereo file and as individual stems to give to other audio and film professionals.

Detailed Tutorial

I really enjoyed Gary's tutorial series on creating epic cinematic compositions. You're not going to find a massive cinematic piece being worked on in the series, all of the functional building blocks to create your own epic sound are here and waiting to be built upon. I found the descriptions of the instrumentation and composition elements to be very helpful. The mention of specific sound libraries was valuable to me as well. I'm looking forward to more products from Gary as the I felt the quality was very good to get me moving in the epic arena.

Overall a good course with some flaws

Overall, this course represents a helpful look at writing cinematic music. It does features some odd choices which would be considered by most professional orchestrators as poor writing (e.g. writing 2nd violins one octave higher than 2st) and some not very informed chord spelling (that B6 is not a B6 at all in that context) but it is very enjoyable and it gave me one or two helpful tips.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from How to expand on a very simple theme There is no one way to do anything, but this video shows a very valid way to take an odd chord progression to create a simple haunting melody and orchestrate it with some really good ideas. No matter what level you are as an orchestrator you will likely get more than one good idea here. The mix of orchestral instruments with synth noise patches it very well done. It is hard to tell where some rise and hit patches are sitting in the mix, so well are they blended with orchestral tympany samples. Kudos.

Everything is very well explained from chord progression to layering and mixing/mastering and exporting stems. Extremely helpfull tutorial. The only thing I would like to hear about is what next steps in advancing furtner besides Groove3 website, like other more advanced tutorials, etc. Thank you for the great tutorial!!
