High quality content
I like the way this instructor deliver his training. Details such as highlight the mentioned part in the screen video are very welcomed. I also like the sample and drum kits that come with this training.

Top Notch!
This course can revolutionize your understanding of groove and beat making. It shows exactly what is going on behind the scenes to create really any style of music you want! Things that seemed mysterious before... I feel like I now have the knowledge and tools to do it myself. I used it in accompaniment with the book that he talks about in the videos, and was amazed at the plethora of midi files and top quality audio samples that came with it. Thanks for a great product!

Underwhelming
There were some good ideas implemented in this course and I am interested in learning more from the authors book. I would like to know where to get hold of the MIDI Ableton project for myself to drill down into the inner workings. Overall, the instruction was unclear in areas, difficult to concentrate on what the author was saying with speech tailing off every other sentence. Also the constant pop up window from the author was very distracting. Slideshow style points were unnecessary. That hat?

A nice, short intro to beat making in Ableton Live
At just over an hour, there's enough here to get you started making your own beats and grooves in Live. At the time of this review, the only comment (non-review) for this course is, "very very basic course only for absolute beginners." While an absolute beginner could probably muddle their way through this, I would recommend a foundation in Live before this series. "First Song with Ableton Live" here on Groove3 will likely give you that foundation. For a beginner interested in grooves and beat making, I recommend starting there with the first 6 videos, then jump over this one. Completing both series is roughly 3 hours. I did have a few technical problems and annoyances--particularly with the kits for the drum rack provided in the course content. I got a "not available" error message when I attempted to use the first kit. I remedied this by loading a stock kit and dropping the course kit on top of it. I also had to point Live to the samples every time I loaded one of the course kits, and for some reason the samples were in two different folders. On at least one of the course kits, a couple of the pads did not trigger any sound. I don't know if has anything to do with me using a PC and the instructor using a Mac, but that leads me to the next annoyance--keyboard shortcuts. The instructor refers to Mac shortcuts (option this, command that) and frequently does not tell you the PC equivalent. Sure, I can look it up, but why not do what other courses do and flash the Mac & PC shortcuts on the screen. There was also a problem of not being able to tell where the instructor was clicking. The tiny, black pointer was hard to find even on a big screen. All in all, there's solid content here unless you're already an accomplished Live user. I particularly liked the instructor's explanation of swing, so check that out (Tutorial 12) if nothing else.

Well Done!
I'm a student and new to making beats. I've watched a number of beatmaking tutorials, but this one is very good, but Josh also gives you a slew of material to work with, like 300 samples, there are drum racks, and other things. That alone makes this tutorial worth watching. His teaching style is easy to understanding, especially for us newbies and I've learned tricks and tidbits that wasn't included in the other tutorials I've watched.
