Maria Martinez and the band starts us off with a Brazilian styled groove.
The Bossa Nova8:27
Maria discusses everything from stick size that creates the Bossa Nova sound, to improvising phrases and figuring out our own rhythms. You will also be looking at our PDF booklet and learning these grooves from the inside out.
The Samba Pt. 17:37
This style is played in 2/2 or cut time. Learn what this means and get a tradition feel for the style.
The Samba Pt. 28:23
Maria discusses the ride cymbal and how she approaches it in Samba music and gives a great performance showing us how it all sounds.
The Samba Pt. 39:18
We explore some grooves being played in odd meters like 3/4 or 7/4 and learn how to count in these signatures. Maria unleashes some great advice that will help you practice and construct your coordination.
Different from the Samba, the Baiao shares some of the same guidelines and time signatures. We jump into the fast paced patterns and quickly learn how to understand them. We also get the band on this one as they demonstrate the places the Baiao will go.
The Partido Alto10:29
This is sometimes referred to as "Funk-Samba". The Partrido Alto is sometimes played as an intro part to a song or a bridge and Maria shows us how to bounce between the styles and then return to your original rhythm. We also get one more performance by the whole band.
