The Clave
Frequently used in Afro-Cuban music, the clave helps keep the style together as a time keeper and backbone to the percussion section of Cuban music. Maria discusses timing and approach for using the clave.

The Mambo Style Pt. 1
There's a wide variety of mambo styles and Maria shows us how it was adapted from hand percussion to the drum set. Using the clave, cowbell and even claps, she simplifies the approach and helps us understand the groove of the style.

The Mambo Style Pt. 2
Maria explains some other time signatures like "2/3 Clave" on the drum set, congas, timbales and more. Maria also goes through the examples listed in the PDF booklet and dives into the bongo bell pattern and some 2/3 clave.

The Nanigo Style
Maria explores the Nanigo style and plays the groove on 2 congas before demonstrating how to translate this to a drum set.
-
5:23
The Songo Style
The Songo Style is a blend of Cuban drumming styles combined with styles of funk and jazz. Originally performed on Cuban percussion instruments, we take take things to the drum set and the band comes in for a performance.

The Mozambique Style
The traditional Mozambique was a form of carnival music that evolved from conga Cuban rhythmic styles. We approach these rhythms from several angles and work the ride cymbal in. Maria also talks a bit more about time signatures like 3/2 and 2/3 and clave direction and signs off with another great performance with the band.
