EDM Producer Laurence Holcombe teaches you how to craft standout tropical house tracks from scratch in this in-depth video tutorial series. He uses Logic Pro X but the information and techniques shown apply to any DAW and workflow.

Laurence starts with a brief introduction of the genre, and then dives right into making the beat. He shows you how to generate and tune the perfect kick, and how to layer samples to make them stand out even more. He then adds the extra elements such as snaps, hats, and shakers to fill out the groove and make it sound and feel more organic.

Next, Laurence develops and programs the chord progression, showing you how different chord progressions affect the mood and groove of the song. Laurence then teaches you how to craft a tropical house style topline melody, tying it all together.

With the beat and melody covered, Laurence focuses on the bass. He explains how to program the right kind of bassline for tropical house, and how to make sure it sits well with the groove and the melody.

Laurence then arranges the song to be as exciting as possible, adding effects to give the track that extra ear candy that draws the listeners in. After that, he creates fills and makes some edits to really move the song forward.

That leads into the video on the final mixdown, in which Laurence makes all his last minute tweaks and adds some secret sauce, and the final master, in which he masters the track for release to the public!

Whether youre new to tropical house music, or an accomplished producer looking for more tips and tricks about this genre, dont miss Producing Tropical House!

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

I learnt the trumpet and piano around age 12 and then guitar a couple of years later. I played in a few indie bands for a few years until I discovered the turntables and Dj'ing. I then swapped the guitar for the synthesizer and the stage for the Dj booth and the rest is history!

2. What training have you had?

I completed a diploma in sound engineering and music technology from islington Music Workshop in London. I am also level 1 certified in Logic. The most important training I have received though is sitting for hours on end at my studio making music!

3. When did you get into recording?

Recording demos for the indie bands I mentioned earlier. Then recording vocals for my tracks as DEF inc. and laterally Rebel Sonix. I also worked in London studio Rollover in around 2005.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've remixed Coldplay, Kylie, Roots Manuva and John B. Labels I have released on include Parlaphone, EMI, Fingerlickin, Eight Fx, Quantum, Botchit and Scarper amongst others. I have composed music for Sony Playstation games, Sky tv, J&B Whiskey, Lexus cars and the BBC to name a few. I have produced online tutorial videos and have had a 1 hour production video in Music Techs magazines cover DVD. I have also Dj'ed at events such as Glastonbury festival and Miami WMC and touring extensively all over the world.

5. Why are you so good at training people?

Well hopefully I have a clear and concise training method mixed with a serious passion for making music. I have previously worked for Apple teaching Logic and also regularly lecture on Logic and electronic music production. I also teach the Ministry of Sound DJ academy in London which involves teaching an introduction to Djing as well as in depth seminars on using NI's Traktor and also Serato Scratch Live. As a producer making cutting edge electronic music, I have to remain at the forefront of new sounds and production techniques. I mix my time between different areas of the music industry - production, remixing, DJing and also teaching which allows me to develop all those skills simultaneously - so I can improve my teaching ability whilst also continuing to develop as a producer (something which you never stop doing!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Overview This is a great tutorial on trop house. Before watching however, I would recommend being extremely familiar with your DAW, synth design and mixing. This will make this series more useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tutorial! I've been exploring the genre of Tropical House on my own, and I was pleasantly surprised how beneficial this tutorial has been for my current skill set. I feel more confident in my production/mixing decisions, especially with this particular genre. I've been using Logic for 10 years now, and thought I had a pretty great workflow. Laurence is a terrific instructor and I was able to pick up some new tips/tricks to improve my workflow within Logic :) Thanks a bunch!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Review Love this guy's style of review. He goes thru a lot of different aspects and gives you insight into not only what he is doing, but always talks about the plugins he uses in detail, not just "set this here". He always explains why he does it. 5/5

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many, many ideas Really enjoyed this series of videos. I'm not an EDM producer, but there are a lot of solid ideas here for production in a variety of genres and styles. Overall, this is just a great overview of how one musician uses Logic Pro X and a complement of plugins as instruments in themselves. Right now, I'm producing a Latin-blues track with no EDM elements per se, but there are ideas about sidechaining, working with MIDI, and mixing that I'm already using or intending to use. There are many similar kinds of videos on YouTube -- Laurence Holcombe finds the right balance (as do many of the Groove3 videos) between explanation, demonstration, detail, and pace. I watched these like I'd watch a TV series. Great material.
