Making Old School Samples with Logic Pro

If you like using samples to create your productions but are getting frustrated searching for just the right one, why not learn how to make your own? In this sound design video course, production guru Larry Holcombe teaches you how to do just that using nothing but Logic Pro. From old school sounding vocals, drums, and bass to all the ear candy like strings, horns, percussion, and more, it's all here! By the end of the course, you'll be ready to create your own custom samples that sound like you searched through crates of records. These sound design videos are great for anyone interested in making old school sounding samples, but they will be best for users of Logic Pro, since all the tools used and shown are found in Logic Pro.

Videos
Playthrough (01:22) - First up, we play through the track we will be making over the duration of the series so you can get an idea of what?s coming.
Vocal Idea (11:06) - We discuss the vision for the track next, reaching for some suitably soulful Apple Loops to have vocals included from the start, around which we'll build the sample.
Drums (11:10) - Next up, we use the drummer track to add an understated Motown-style drum groove. This will serve as our rhythmic foundation.
Chords (11:44) - This video is concerned with the harmonic structure of the piece. We use Electric Piano to jam out some chords using the chord trigger and the MIDI keyboard.
Lead Piano (05:20) - Next up, we add a lead piano part with a Logic channel preset, which gives us more of a topline melody.
Bass (11:18) - This video covers the low-end groove of our track. We add a bassline using a Logic preset instrument and channel strip tweaked to fit the vibe.
Organ Pt. 1 (10:17) - We cover organ next to fill out the space, using the sustain pedal to speed up the rotary cabinet modulation.
Organ Pt. 2 (11:38) - In this video, we continue adding organ to our B section.
Guitars (12:26) - Next up, we look at adding our own guitar parts, again using some guitar preset channels. This goes a long way in taking the sample closer towards a retro feel.
Horns (09:00) - In this video, we add a simple horn melody to provide additional melodic and harmonic interest.
Percussion (12:03) - Next up, we add some chimes and glockenspiel to punctuate the arrangement.
Strings (11:07) - We cover adding additional strings next to add that all-important sheen and air to the sample.
Vintage Master Chain (05:34) - This video focuses on adding a final master chain to really take the sample back in time, adding to the overall authenticity.
