Making Old School Samples with NI Plugins
If you're looking to create some of your own vintage, old-school-sounding samples and loops for use in your productions, this is for you. In this informative Native Instrument video course, production expert Larry Holcombe takes you step-by-step through the sample and sound design process, using nothing but Native Instruments virtual instruments and plug-ins. You'll learn how to create vintage drum grooves, add percussion, create chord progressions and basslines, add tape wobble effects and other lo-fi touches, and much more. These videos are designed for those with basic familiarity with Native Instruments plug-ins, virtual instruments, and their DAW of choice.
Videos
• Introduction (02:02) - In this first video, we play through the track we will end up with and introduce what will be covered during the course.
• Adding a Drum Foundation Using ABBEY ROAD 60s DRUMMER (05:30) - Next up, we use the Abbey Road 60s Drummer instrument to add two drum grooves with fills. These are then amended to fit the vision.
• Filling Out the Drum Groove with Percussion (04:02) - We use SESSION PERCUSSIONIST to add conga and triangle parts to fill out the groove and add some color to the drums.
• Chords with PLAYBOX (13:16) - In this video, we use PLAYBOX to jam with some chord ideas before using drag-and-drop to add them into the project. We then add some rhythm and edit the MIDI to fit the drum groove.
• Enhancing the Chords (15:54) - We continue working on our chord sequence next, ensuring it's strong enough to carry the harmony of the track.
• B Section & Vocal Ideas (15:11) - Next up, we add some extra chords for a B section before using GLAZE to add some vocal adlibs locked to the key.
• Piano Lead Sections (08:32) - We add an octave piano lead part next to sit on the harmony and add some melodic interest.
• Bass (18:09) - Using SCARBEE JAY-BASS plugin, we add a bass part next, injecting as much realism as possible by using muted pops, slides, and humanization.
• Organ (15:06) - Next up is organ. We use VINTAGE ORGANS to add a part, using the sustain pedal to change the Leslie cabinet speed. This fills out the loop and massively adds to the authenticity of the sound.
• Organ Part 2 (13:24) - We create a similar organ part for our B section next.
• Guitars (17:36) - We use GUITAR RIG 7 to tweak a tape wobble preset and add a vintage guitar upbeat chug, which helps to increase the realism of our vintage loop.
• Brass (18:00) - SESSION HORNS PRO is used to play a simple brass part. This is enhanced by using a variety of keyswitches to change the articulations, resulting in a more authentic sound.
• Glockenspiel (01:59) - We quickly double up the piano melody with a Glockenspiel from the KONTAKT library next.
• Strings (18:04) - In this video, SESSION STRINGS PRO 2 is used to create an emotive high string part. This again utilizes key switches to change string articulations for added realism.
• Final Master Chain (07:15) - Finally, we add some vintage crunch alongside tape wobble from GUITAR RIG 7 to finish off our vintage vibe.
