Cubase MIDI Guru Guide

If you're a Cubase user that's new to MIDI or simply have a limited knowledge of it, you don't know what you're missing! MIDI is an extremely powerful tool with dozens of features that can speed up your workflow, increase your creativity, and plenty more. In this Cubase video course, MIDI expert Gary Hiebner teaches you all you need to know about using MIDI with Cubase. From simple note input to creating custom expression maps and more, Gary runs the gamut. These videos are for new and intermediate Cubase MIDI users.

Videos
Introduction (01:03) - Gary begins by explaining what aspects of Cubase MIDI functionality are going to be covered in this video series.
MIDI Velocities (09:38) - Explore MIDI Velocities and how they can change the sound and performance of a MIDI Note. Gary also explains the different values of each MIDI note and how to edit your Velocity notes.
CC1 Modulation (05:32) - Learn about CC1 modulation, how it works with different instruments, and how CC1 is assigned in each instrument.
How CC11 Expression Works (07:15) - Here, Gary will show you how to add an expression lane and how it differs from CC1 modulation. You'll also see how you can use the two control change lanes together.
List Editor (03:13) - With the List Editor, you can see all the MIDI note data listed in the window. Gary demonstrates how you can use this window to edit MIDI note data differently than in the other editor windows.
Inline Editor (04:17) - Discover how to view and use the Inline MIDI Editor lane and learn how it differs from the MIDI Key Editor view.
How to Use Note Expression (06:54) - In this video, we take a look at what note expression is and how you can edit the volume, pan, pitch, cutoff, and resonance on a note basis - not just as a control change lane. This gives you much more expression control over chords, for example.
Sending Multiple MIDI Tracks to One Instrument (04:22) - Here, we go over the MIDI-routing capabilities in Cubase and see how you can route out multiple MIDI tracks to the same instrument.
Using MIDI Modifiers to Humanize a Performance (12:03) - Discover how to use the MIDI Modifiers to humanize our MIDI performances, altering and randomizing the velocities and start positions of the notes.
How to Use Aftertouch (04:44) - In this video, we explore how you can use a MIDI controller with aftertouch capabilities and map this to a specific parameter. Plus, see how you can view this aftertouch MIDI data on your events.
Multi MIDI Part Editing (03:29) - Discover the ways you can edit multiple MIDI parts at the same time, either by using the Event Part colors to view different parts or by choosing to either edit all the parts or only the active MIDI part.
Sending MIDI to Multiple Instruments with the MIDI Sends (06:02) - Here, we show you how to use MIDI Sends to send a single MIDI event to multiple instruments. Plus, learn how you can still add different CC note data events on the other instrument tracks.
Using the Quantize Panel for Grooves (08:14) - Explore the Quantize Panel and learn how you can use this not only to improve the timing of your recorded in MIDI, but also to give the straight MIDI more of a groove with the parameters in the Quantize panel.
Multitimbral Instruments & Multi Outputs (08:24) - This video explains how to use and setup multitimbral instruments and the respective MIDI tracks that are needed to route to the different MIDI channels. Also, Gary shows you how to create multiple outputs for these instruments so that you can have a separate output for each instrument within the multitimbral instrument.
Key-changing & Program Change (08:35) - Learn how to switch between different articulations on your instruments. First, we look at using key-switching note pitch data to switch articulations. Then, we see how you can use program change to switch articulations and learn the benefits of this over key-changing.
Expression Maps & Setup (09:30) - In this video, Gary shows you how to create your own expression map for an instrument. Then learn how to assign the expression map to the instrument and draw in your dynamic articulation changes in the expression map lane.
Drum Editor (03:34) - Here we look at using the Drum Editor and see why it's a better tool to program your drums than the Key Editor. You can clearly see where each hit is, and it's very easy to move data around to the respective drum hits.
Editing & Saving Your Own Drum Map (07:48) - Discover how you can create and build up your own drum map for your drum instruments and how these maps look in the Drum Editor.
MIDI Arps, Scaling, & Transposition (06:28) - In this video, we look further at the MIDI inserts and how you can use the MIDI Apps to transform your chords into melodies. We also look at how you can create harmonies of your arp patterns with the transposition function and force the notes to a specific scale.
Step Input MIDI Record (06:05) - We finish off by showing you how you can use the Step Input Record function to record fast passages slowly, one note at a time. These recorded input notes will retain their pitch and velocities, but you can input them at your own pace.
