Preparing & Working with Movies in Logic Pro

Logic Pro expert Doug Zangar presents a comprehensive series of video tutorials on working with movie files in Logic Pro! If you're interested in film scoring with Logic Pro and all of the useful features it contains, this is the course to watch. Doug walks you through the complete process involved, from file management to getting the most from your virtual instruments and much more. You also get the movie file so you can follow along and create your own score! These videos are for Logic Pro users that are new to using video.

Setting Up Logic with a Movie
Importing a Movie (06:19) - This video first shows how to inspect a movie's properties and then how to bring it into Logic with the proper frame rate, audio sample rate, and synced time code.
Trim Movie Method Pt. 1 (06:05) - Discover the different ways to navigate through the movie to locate a cue start. Next, learn how to change the SMPTE tie location in the Synchronization window to have Logic's bar 1 be the start of the cue.
Trim Movie Method Pt. 2 (07:13) - This video starts with an overview of the Global Movie Track. It then shows the Movie Settings window and demonstrates how to trim the movie with movie player and Global Movie Track menu items. Movie Preferences get a quick look as well.
Markers Overview (08:54) - Explore the process of creating Standard and Movie Scene markers as well as naming, coloring, and SMPTE locking. Both the Marker Global Track and the Marker List windows are explored, and key commands are also demonstrated.
Tempo Map from Markers (10:01) - Learn how to use locked markers and the global Beat Mapping Track to create a tempo map. See how to use time signatures to get your tempo changes on the first down beat of a measure. The amount of tolerance for early and late hits and tempo variations are also covered.
Working with Articulations
Configuring Software Instruments (12:55) - There are multiple ways to address different articulations of an instrument. This video takes you through a track per articulation to a multi-output, multi timbral instance of Kontakt.
Key Switching Pt. 1 (06:10) - Explore two Kontakt instruments and learn how to map and trigger articulation changes via MIDI pitches.
Key Switching Pt. 2 (07:26) - Get tips on using MIDI notes for Key Switching. Learn about MIDI chase, start point, and lengths of the notes, and discover ideas on how to better view them in the Piano Roll Editor. Hiding the notes in the Score Editor is also covered.
Switching with CCs Pt. 1 (09:59) - It?s also possible to use CC values to switch articulations. This video goes through the setup process in the Session Strings Pro 2 interface and includes a trip to the environment to make sure CC values are correct.
Switching with CCs Pt. 2 (08:48) - This video looks at using CC values to change articulations in the Symphony Series Brass Ensemble library. Articulations are changed using a knob or slider, and editing is shown in the Piano Roll, Event List, and Step Editor.
Switching with Note Velocity (08:34) - You can set articulations to be triggered by a limited range of MIDI note velocities. Discover how to do this in both the Session Strings Pro Two and Symphony Series Brass Ensemble libraries.
Switching with Articulation ID Pt. 1 (08:17) - Get a basic understanding of how an Articulation Set is set up for a library. The Articulation Editor window is explored to show how to create custom mapping from an external MIID keyboard to a library's key switch notes.
Switching with Articulation ID Pt. 2 (06:35) - This video shows how to set up the Articulation Editor to send out CC values to trigger articulation switching. Next, it covers how to edit recorded articulations in the Piano Roll Editor, Score Editor, and Event List.
Working with Automation
Automation Pt. 1 (07:16) - This video covers setting up Kontakt's Host and MIDI automation, including mapping to an external controller. Correct Logic settings are also covered.
Automation Pt. 2 (08:20) - Using the Symphony Series Brass Ensemble library, learn how to map, record, and edit Dynamics, Attack, and Tightness in Logic's Region Automation.
Setting & Recording the Click
The Click Pt. 1 (07:48) - This explores the Urei click and how to set Logic's metronome settings to approximate it. Then see how to record Logic's click and edit for correct odd meter groupings as well as prepare a count-in for a tempo change.
The Click Pt. 2 (05:07) - Discover how to use MIDI regions to trigger a click from software instruments; in this video, the sampled Urei click and Logic's Klopfgeist are used. Editing MIDI notes for correct odd meter grouping is shown, Bounce in Place is covered, and exporting a .mid file is discussed.
Round Trip between Logic and Sibelius
Exporting to a Notation Program (09:43) - This video shows exporting both a .mid and MusicXML file and how each file looks once imported into Sibelius, along with the pros and cons of each.
Importing from a Notation Program (10:35) - Doug demonstrates how to import two versions of project from Sibelius: a Standard MIDI File (.mid) and a MusicXML file. See the pros and cons of each file format and the advantage of importing both into the same Logic project.
Setting up Logic with Vienna Ensemble Pro
Logic & VEP Pt. 1 (07:15) - This video shows a basic example of setting up VEP (Vienna Ensemble Pro) and a multi-output instance of VEP in Logic Pro to work with each other.
Logic & VEP Pt. 2 (08:41) - Compare CPU and RAM usage using the same Logic project with the software instruments hosted three different ways.
Recap
Recap (08:27) - Doug reviews elements covered in the series - from bringing a film into Logic to exporting the finished music as a demo. Then the Export Audio to Movie function is demonstrated, creating a new movie of the cue with the music.
