Ear Training Explained - Triads

Have you ever heard a song or arrangement and wished you could recognize the chords or progressions? Well, Doug Zangar has done it again with his second installment of ear training, this time focused on Triads.

The Theory
Creating Triads (07:29) - This video shows the construction and interval analysis of the 4 triad types: major, minor, augmented and diminished. Root position, first and second inversion are shown.
Creating Arpeggios (04:55) - This video shows the arpeggios for the 4 triad types: major, minor, augmented and diminished. Root position, first and second inversion are shown.
Triads in Root Position
Major Triads in Root Position (06:04) - Learn the sound of major triads played as chords and arpeggios.
Minor Triads in Root Position (05:47) - Study the sound of minor triads played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major & Minor Triads (06:33) - Test yourself on the difference between the two types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Diminished Triads in Root Position (06:19) - Learn the sound of diminished triads played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major, Minor & Diminished Triads (09:39) - Test yourself on the difference between the three types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Augmented Triads in Root Position (05:54) - Discover the sound of diminished triads played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - All 4 Triad Types (11:23) - Test yourself on the difference between the four types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Triads in First Inversion
Major Triads in First Inversion (05:45) - Study the sound of major triads in first inversion played as chords and arpeggios.
Minor Triads in First Inversion (06:08) - Learn the sound of minor triads in first inversion played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major & Minor Triads in First Inversion (06:32) - Test yourself on the difference between the two types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Diminished Triads in First Inversion (05:19) - Learn the sound of diminished triads played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major, Minor & Diminished Triads in First Inversion (10:09) - Test yourself on the difference between the three types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Augmented Triads (03:07) - Explore why these don't really invert to the ear. These triads are symmetrical and inversions can't be determined when they are played by themselves. It's all explained here.
Triads in Second Inversion
Major Triads in Second Inversion (06:32) - Discover the sound of major triads in second inversion played as chords and arpeggios.
Minor Triads in Second Inversion (05:19) - Learn the sound of minor triads in second inversion played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major & Minor Triads in Second Inversion (07:04) - Test yourself on the difference between the two types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Diminished Triads in Second Inversion (05:32) - Study the sound of diminished triads in second inversion played as chords and arpeggios.
Test - Major, Minor & Diminished Triads (09:50) - Test yourself on the difference between the three types of triads using chords and arpeggios.
Testing
Mixed Major Triads Test (06:59) - These are in root position and have both inversions. Test yourself on the difference between different voicings of the same type of triad using chords and arpeggios.
Mixed Minor Triads Test (07:01) - These are in root position and have both inversions. Test yourself on the difference between different voicings of the same type of triad using chords and arpeggios.
Mixed Diminished Triads Test (06:55) - These are in root position and have both inversions. Test yourself on the difference between different voicings of the same type of triad using chords and arpeggios.
Final Exam!
Final Exam Pt. 1 (08:55) - All triad types played as chords in root position and both inversions. The toughest test!
Final Exam Pt. 2 (09:54) - All triad types played as arpeggios in root position and both inversions. Perhaps not as tough as the chord version, but still a good challenge!
