Logic Score Editor Explained

Presented by Apple Certified Logic Trainer Doug Zangar, "Logic Score Editor Explained" reveals one of Logic's most elusive, yet powerful features, the Score Editor. If you use Logic and need to know how to create and compose in traditional music notation, this series is a must have.

Getting Started

• General Concepts (05:41) - This introductory video explains the general concepts of how and why to use the Score Editor. Basic manipulation of notes and graphics as well as displayed parameters and printer set up are looked at.

• Preferences & Settings Pt. 1 (03:36) - This video looks at the various display, system font and camera tool settings.

• Preferences & Settings Pt. 2 (02:50) - This video shows editing preferences settings and looks at region and track parameters that affect Score Editor display. Import score settings is also covered.

• Accessing the Score Editor (01:59) - This video shows multiple methods of opening the score editor in the Arrange Window and as a separate window.

• Record Live Performance (05:14) - This video shows recording live and viewing the information in the Score Editor. It reviews the score checkbox and staff style settings and shows moving and copying notes. The Caps Lock Keyboard use and settings are also covered.

Window Overview

• Global Signature Track (09:00) - This video shows setting up and using the Global Signature Track for time and key signatures. Add, edit, copy, paste and delete are covered.

• Global Chord Track (09:04) - This video shows using the Global Chord Track to generate chord symbols from a MIDI part in the score window. The Global Transposition track is looked at, as is the Define Chord window in the Score Editor. Both tips and caveats are discussed - it’s not a perfect system.

Text Menu

• Text Menu (05:59) - This video covers the ins and outs of the Text Styles window. It shows how to edit existing styles and create your own. The interactivity with various settings windows and alignment in the inspector is also covered.

View Menu

Creating a Lead Sheet

• Piano Part to Horns Pt. 1 (05:32) - This video works with four voice piano part and assigns it to individual horn tracks. Creation of needed tracks and assigning voices to tracks are demonstrated.

• Piano Part to Horns Pt. 2 (08:11) - This second video shows editing the score set, numbers and names settings, adding articulations and dynamics with key commands. Printing is also covered, with option click on the score set popup menu demonstrated as a way to facilitate printing parts.

Create an Orchestral Score Template

• Orchestral Score Template Pt. 1 (04:26) - This first video shows naming and coloring channel strips, setting track icons, creating empty MIDI regions and naming/coloring them the track name and color.

• Orchestral Score Template Pt. 2 (07:47) - This last video covers setting up staff styles, score sets, bar numbering, large time signatures, page setup, and saving as a template.

Mapping drums

• Notate Drums Pt. 1 (03:23) - This first video shows assigning a MIDI drum part to the Drum staff style. The staff style is explained and the position and group parameters are also explored.

• Notate Drums Pt. 2 (04:33) - This second video jumps to the environment to create a mapped instrument. The parameters of the Mapped Instrument window are demonstrated and the mapped instrument cabling is also discussed.
