Ableton Live includes everything you need to take your creative spark and turn it into a shareable masterpiece. In this video tutorial series, dance music hitmeister Timothy Allan takes you from start-up to wrap-up!

Timothy first hits the ground running, teaching you how to import samples and warp them into a classic four on the floor dance groove which leads right into tutorials on how to get the most out of the Ableton Live Drum Rack.

Now that the beat is under your belt, Timothy shows you how to create a killer bass patch using Operator, and how to get Sidechaining setup and going in Live. Then its time to learn the difference between Session View and Arrangement View, and all about Clips, including how to use the Clip buttons, and how to record and edit Clips.

With your song well underway, its now time to start adding flourishes. Timothy shows you how to use MIDI Effects, how to Warp, Slice, Dice, and Effect Vocal Snippets, and how to use Instrument Racks.

The finish line is in sight Timothy shows you how to use Multi-Macro Mapping to map multiple controls to a single knob, allowing you to add cool, realtime multi-function moves to your tracks.

Timothy now finishes up the arrangement, spices up the vocals, and reverses some audio files to add the final wow factor to the tracks. Last but not least, Timothy shows you how to export the final mix to a format you can share with the world!

If youre new to Ableton Live, and maybe even to digital music in general, First Song with Ableton Live will get you started and on the path of complete song creation. Check it out today!

Best in Groove!

Been through most of Ableton Live lessons plus a ton on vst's but this is first one that ties it all together and makes it happen. I did more in a 30 minute session this afternoon just to try out my new learning than in all my previous ones! Very well done. This is a must buy for anyone wanting to get a real hands on lesson with Ableton.

Best Ableton tutorial I have had so far.

Really like how he gets to the meat and potatoes of the program. Like the attitude and tone of voice, makes it even easier to pay attention.

Better than expected

Based on some of the previous, less positive reviews and comments, I didn't expect to get much out of this series. But since I've been struggling to get through the other introductory Ableton videos on Groove3, I figured I'd give it a try. Why are people harshing on this series??? It's engaging, I'm learning a ton, and the flow of information works way better for my learning style. Plus I enjoy the author's quirky narrative style. Definitely recommended for anyone else having difficulty getting over Ableton's initial learning curve.

Did not live up to expectation

The instructor has a very distracting way of speaking which shifts the focus on to himself and away from what he is trying to teach. That would be manageable if the course were good but for a beginner, like me, I found that the instructor went off on to relatively obscure tangents, particularly focusing on the technical aspects of sound editing, at the expense of how to use the program to put together a song. The course was supposed to be about how to write a song using the program, not how to edit what you already wrote. He seemed to get intrigued with his own thoughts and lost what I felt was the advertised topic - Songwriting with Ableton. I would not recommend this course.

1. When did you start dabbling in music?

As a very young kid my parents signed me up for piano lessons. My mom said if I quit that I would regret it later on in life, but I thought piano lessons were boring! Electronic music was a natural progression for me from those early days, it let me combine my love of technology and all things nerdy with a love of loud and strange noises.

2. What training have you had?

I've had years and years of training from a good friend of mine named "The Internet", and before him my other good pal "Trial and Error".

3. When did you get into recording?

The wonder of synthesis and certain electronic music is that you never really have to record anything if you don't want to! Although I do remember way back in the day recording found sounds on an old garage sale cassette recorder I bought, and using those samples in old school Trackers on the Apple II.

4. People you have worked with/for?

I've worked with, and for, a whole bunch of fantastic people so far. Some of the more popular ones include Empire of the Sun, Dirty South, Ash, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Kennedy, Hong Kong Blondes, Loverush UK, Molly Bancroft, Made by Monkeys, Tiff Lacey, Marcie, Offer Nissim and Kirsty Hawkshaw. Madonna chose a track I made for a compilation she released, although she never called or took me for lunch! That really doesn't count as 'working with' does it!?

5. Why are you so good at training people?

I'm good at training people because I remember what it was like to be the newbie, and I try and go over things that I would have found interesting and cool, back when I was starting out. I take the time to learn the techniques inside and out, and then break that down quickly for people.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by from Perfect introduction for me. Instructional videos are often comprehensive, step-by-step guides into the features of a given product. They often take the form of a video version of a users' guide or a users' reference manual. While this is great for really delving into the details, this is not the best way for me to learn. Starting from the details and building up to the big picture doesn't work well for me. I do much better if the instruction starts with broader concepts, like the design of the workflow. If I know, in general, how stuff works and where to look for what I want, I don't need a lot of detail. I can get to that on my own. This video series does exactly that. Tim Allen doesn't treat you like you've never seen a DAW before or don't know computer interfaces. He just gets to the specifics about how Live works. If you need more in-depth specifics, there are many nice tutorials here at Groove3. But Mr. Allen's intro here is really all you'll need if you're comfortable drilling further down on your own.
